“Our thoughts go to the whole of the Jewish community today,” Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt announced after a lone gunman shot and killed a Jew named Dan Uzan, an unarmed volunteer guarding a bat mitzvah ceremony. “They belong in Denmark, they are strong part of our community. And we will do everything we can to protect the Jewish community in our country.” Heads-up Sons of Israel: when a terrorist strikes, the Danish police are only minutes away. That said, they did manage to eliminate the threat. But not before . . .

In the first attack, a gunman with an automatic weapon killed one person and wounded three police officers at a cafe. Danish media identified the deceased as film director Finn Norgaard, 55.

The free-speech event was also attended by Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks, who is known for provocative drawings, including a 2007 cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad that led to threats against the 68 year old.

The French ambassador to Denmark, Francois Zimeray, also attended the discussion. Both were unharmed in the shooting.

Just a quick reminder of Denmark’s highly restrictive gun laws [via gunpolicy.org]

– In Denmark, the right to private gun ownership is not guaranteed by law.

– In Denmark, private possession of handguns (pistols and revolvers) is permitted only with special authorisation

– Applicants for a gun owner’s licence in Denmark are required to establish a genuine reason to possess a firearm, for example, hunting, target shooting, collection

– Licensed firearm owners in Denmark are permitted to possess only ammunition suitable for the intended firearm

I guess Danish Jews and political satirists (and the rest of the country’s disarmed population) are left hoping Denmark’s gun laws will prevent future terrorist attacks. You know, better than they did in this case. Maybe they should try making it even tougher for law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms. Yeah, that’ll work! Or not . . .

  1. If i lived in Europe i would ignore local anti-gun laws. The time to play by the rules has long gone. Ordinary citizens (Jewish or not) should arm themselves by ALL means, whether they are legal or not.

  2. A muslim terrorist targeted Jews? You mean this wasn’t ‘a random of act of extremism on people that just happened to be in a particular place’?

Makes the shooting of innocent apartment dwellers by a rabid leftist over parking spots sort of pale by comparison.

    • Yeah, but he was a “lone wolf” – it’s not like there’s some sort of organized anti-Semitic Islamic organization or anything.

  3. “… a lone gunman shot and killed a Jew named Dan Uzan, an unarmed volunteer guarding a bat mitzvah ceremony.”

Can you really say that an unarmed person is actually “guarding” anything?

I think it is much more accurate to sat that an unarmed person is a look-out, a sentry.

  4. Were the police officers standing guard at the two locations actually armed? Or were they just unarmed targets of convenience ala the French officer gunned down at point-blank range?

  5. Again secular leftist governments have killed their citizens, but don’t worry because there is nothing to worry about. This is another random act of violence that could have only been prevented by comprehensive gun leglation…shit…wait…um…GUNS!!!!

  6. ” Applicants for a gun owner’s licence in Denmark are required to establish a genuine reason to possess a firearm, for example, hunting, target shooting, collection “

Could you add to that list “personal defense against Islamic Jihadists? Or, is “personal defense” against any threat not a valid reason in Denmark? Of course, I guess personal Defense could fall under “hunting” or “target shooting”.
