In this year’s Reader’s Choice Awards, the list for “Best New Rifle of 2014” was longer than any other category. Even though 2014 was a bit of a down year for manufacturers in terms of new kit, there’s no doubt that there were some real gems within that short list. According to our readers, and clocking in with three times as many votes as the next “new” product, SIG SAUER’s new MPX rifle is officially the TTAG Reader’s Choice for best new rifle of 2014 . . .

Although technically the MPX hasn’t reached the store shelves yet, since the release date was set for 2014 and the first production run of the rifle has begun, I’m going to give them the win. For more information about the rifle and our first impressions, check out this article.

TTAG Readers’ Choice Awards methodology

The poll was conducted using a custom polling application which presented each respondent with a list of options for each category. Respondents could either select from the list, choose not to respond, or add an additional option at the bottom. Any added items would be displayed to all subsequent respondents (any item worthy of “Item of the Year” would, in theory, be added fairly quickly by respondents). Items which were not relevant (outside the time frame or irrelevant responses, like “my homemade ammo” for best ammo of the year) were periodically removed, and all associated votes for that item in that category were eliminated as well. Respondents were discouraged from voting multiple times by having their IP address recorded and banned from making subsequent responses. The polling period lasted 7 full days and elicited 1,104 responses.

    • I agree. At first, when I saw it, i was totally meh about it. Looked cool but, outside of the ak pistols, i didnt really like the idea of an oversized pistol.

Then I saw it will have an adapter for the sig brace.

      Me gusta. 🙂

      • The pic is indeed a rifle, but Sig has no plans to offer that version to us commoners. It would have to be transferred on a Form 4 as it is a SBR.

We’ll only be able to buy the pistol version which with the addition of the Sig Brace, makes it into a kinda sorta rifle.

Just goes to show how meager the new rifle offereings were this year when an as yet unreleased gun available only in pistol form to the masses takes the rifle crown.

  1. Innovative um. yes … obtain-ability level — = unicorn. I don’t know anyone in the general public who has a Sig MPX. Only industry. Unless everyone had a chance to try or even see one…don’t know how it can be ‘rifle’ of the year especially for 2014. ok off the soap box.

    • I thought anticipation was a valid metric for the poll.

I voted CZ Scorpion, because it’s the one firearm I’m definitely buying in 2015…or one of two, if you agree with the ATF that a suppressor is a firearm.

      • I’d go for the CZ Evo Scorpion too…and more likely to get it faster than the Sig MPX. I think Sig if they don’t know it has a lot of ‘work’ to do for not only the MPX but the 1911-22 buy one Sig get another thing…. their name is getting more and more tarnished even though they have mostly cleared house for some ‘bad’ past promotions.

    • Shooting an MPX at an event doesn’t mean buying and owning one. Still checking with our national distributors and Sig for an actual release date.

      • Broad ownership is a ridiculous criteria when the premise is choosing a new product. You don’t wait til chevy has sold half a million Impalas over a five year production run before rating it as car of the year.

        • ya, but that’s apples to oranges…. jeeezz seriously ??? O boy a few have shot it…. I didn’t mean the entire firearms population… just but I also don’t know one person outside the ‘media’ test community that actually owns an MPX…. usually “blank of the year” usually ‘earns’ a least a little bit of merit other wise its just empty hype.

  2. So a pistol that nobody can buy is the rifle of the year?

Anyone want to buy some waterfront property in Allepo? Really good price!

  3. Should there have been a “concept of the year” category?

That would be more fitting, since only the shooting elite has fired one.

How do you vote for a gun you’ve never fired? I did, not would, not…

  4. What was second place so I can think of that as the real winner? A gun that isn’t even out in the wild yet shouldn’t have won. Like somebody said above, this thing could be the next R51. TTAG writers may have shot a hand fitted prototype version, but funny things happen when something hits the production line and is mass produced.

  5. I’m not sure how to reconcile the pushback on this winning with the fact that we, the TTAG readership, voted for it to win. Apparently the folks who comment and the folks who voted don’t socialize with each other much haha

    • That’s what I thought. Then I saw the charging handle and bolt catch/release straight out of 1957. I want my modern replacement to not have tech a decade older than what it is replacing. For me taking the worst part of the AR and throwing it on something that had the potential to be amazing just killed it. Ordered a Kriss Vector instead and will get the Scorpion Evo as well.

If only the MPX were a side charger I would be all over it, but that is unfortunately a deal breaker for me.

  6. I hated seeing this post. It left a bad taste in my mouth and actually made me think less of this site and its readers. How could a gun that has yet to hit the shelves be the top rifle. Sure Nick….your vote counts…but the rest smells of paid advertisement and wishful thinking….far from truth.

  7. Look people on this site dont have the time or money to vet every rifle on that list. Look at the list as a wishlist. Which of those rifles would you rather have? The people chose the MPX. Heck I want one too. That would be an awesome hd gun, and would be a hoot out on the range. Too bad I’m in Cali and have no chance of ownership.

  8. I understand the basic disagreement with atf holding up sales of the rifle/muzzle brake – but why not in the meantime have an Option to purchase this as a rifle in civilian semi-auto sbr with integrated suppressor to allow for Some cash flow for Sig from the folks that are willing to pay for two tax stamps?

    Hello! Sig! Are you listening?

You can’t email this question to Sig because you can’t Find an email easily on the customer service page.

I fear Sig may triumph on their lawsuit just on time to see the batf close that pesky nfa gun trust loophole and gut the sale of the complete product anyway.

That outcome would be a truly Pyrrhic victory.

  9. Everyone bashing this rifle might feel pretty stupid if it turns out to be as good as what the initial reports indicate. And I’m saying this as someone who didn’t have an opportunity to vote.

  10. What a joke … how many people voted here? Sig has been jerking around civilians over the last 3 years on their releases – the 716 DMR, the P227 …. its disgusting and disrespectful to their customers.
