Did Buds Gun Shop Bungle Black Friday?

Screen Shot 2014-11-28 at 10.55.13 AM

We’re too hung over from a tryptophan-induced coma to engage in much serious Googling, but we’re getting lots of reports of unsatisfied shoppers who tried and failed to take advantage of Black Friday deals at internet mega-retailer Bud’s Gun Shop. Here’s a representative email rant we received:

I know that your website is all about getting the right information out there to people that actually want to be informed. But I feel that some of the online retailers are pulling badly managed Black Friday Deals or even bait an switch tactics to lure people to buy from them.

I got up at 6 AM EST this morning to try and take advantage at the two ticket items listed here at Bud’s at 8 AM EST, but was met with extreme website not found cloudflare errors. On top of that all off their offices were also closed. Apparently they were having an online sale before anyone in the company was at work (Business Hours 9am-9pm)

If you check on Bud’s Facebook in the comments of the November 26 post about the Black Friday sale you’ll see all the evidence, lots of people posting images of website being down.

Granted I know that I am just one person that’s probably feeling very cheated that I got up early to try and take advantage of online Black Friday deals only to be screwed over and out of the deal entirely.

I guess I just wanted someone to know other than hundreds maybe thousands of people cheated out of a Black Friday deal that wasn’t properly prepared for or even given proper recognition.

Feel free to use the comments for a little pre-Festivus airing of your Black Friday grievances.

I am shocked — shocked — to find a retailer advertised a black Friday deal that could not actually be purchased!

On a related note, Buds probably prevented the guy from wasting $150 +$70 or so in transfer fees on crappy guns.

    1. avatar Cody says:

I don’t know where you live, but that seems high for transfer fees. I bought one of the surplus Beretta 92s buds has a few weeks ago and was very pleased with the gun and the $10 transfer my FFL charges. Very nice gun for $310 all said and done. YMMV

      1. avatar RandallOfLegend says:

I don’t know where you live but no one here does transfers for less than $35.

        1. avatar WV Cycling says:

Same, most here are $35-50. One pawn shop that has a couple distribution licenses with gun companies charges $35 for normal transfers, and $50 if they are a seller of that gun. WTF.

I drive 20 miles each way to McCall’s Cash and Pawn in Jane Lew, WV for their $15 transfers, their fast FFL info sending, and remembering me by name. Half the time, they have my 4473 and gun on the table seconds after I enter the door.

Damn worth the $5-7 in gas.

        2. avatar Barry says:

There are plenty of FFLs around here who do transfers for $15-20. And I know of at least one who does $10 transfers for MIL/LEO.

        3. avatar Icyou says:

Ehh my LGS has always done it for free for me, but I spend way too much money there

        4. avatar Grindstone says:

Local pawnshop/class-3 dealer chain does $10 transfers. They’re really great.

        5. avatar M Derleth says:

Columbus, Ohio Pickett’s Gun Works. $15 transfers all day long baby.

          http://www.fixmygun.biz/

        6. avatar Toby in KS says:

Jess at Wichita Gun Club does FFL transfers for $15. Support him. Please. He’s trying to get us a good rifle range.

        7. avatar Eric in WI says:

Uh 10 bucks all around this area, there are even a couple places that do not charge at all.

    2. avatar KB Dave says:

You must live in California if your transfer fees are that high. In my area (Utah), everything I’ve seen is $25 or less. The shop I go to charges me $10 for a transfer, if they charge me at all. I buy enough stuff from them that I get pretty good deals.

      1. avatar Canopis says:

Most places in the Los Angeles area charge $80-$100. Not that it matters, because I’m sure the guns aren’t on the California “nanny list,” meaning they can’t be brought into the state (there are exceptions, but that just adds more $$).

    3. avatar Slick says:

      Your California is showing…

      🙂

The least expensive transfer fee I have ever seen in CA is $45. One ffl wanted to charge $100. SMH

It makes sense from a business standpoint. They have to store the firearm for 10 days plus, take up an employees time to fill out useless paperwork, etc. And $25 of that goes to the state for the DROS fee, even though they have been operating at a surplus since forever.

    4. avatar Soccerchainsaw says:

To me the question shouldn’t be how much does your FFL charge as a transfer fee, the question should be why the hell do we have to go through an FFL for the legal purchase of an item that we have a constitutionally protected right to own?

    5. avatar Keep trying says:

i bought one of the door buster deals. The site was overwhelmed with traffic and crashed. I just kept refreshing for about 20 minutes and finally got through and ordered one of the tisas ziganas for $99(normally 350)

  2. avatar Pikes Pete says:

Hmmm…”screwed over” because he couldn’t order something online.

Increase the meds and go back to sleep.

    1. avatar Mr Pierogie says:

Yeah, “poor me, they had a $99 deal which I was unable to get, they didn’t get any of my money, therefore THEY screwed ME over…boo hoo!” Give me a break. If they messed up or if their site was down, go find a deal somewhere else. Nobody owes you anything.

      1. avatar Mr Pierogie says:

And with that out of my system, it’s time for feats of strength!

    2. avatar Hannibal says:

Yup. I can kinda see the ‘bait and switch’ complaints when it’s a physical location that you had to drive to and walk around in… but come on. The effort here was waking up and turning on a laptop. It must have taken longer to write that email than to realize the site was boned and go back to sleep.

      Big deal.

  3. avatar Former Water Walker says:

Oh man there goes my $99Canik(LOL)

    1. avatar Dirk Diggler says:

I finally got my Canik Stingray C back after having custom night sights installed for $275. The gun cost me $280. but it is not accurate as all get up

  4. avatar Scott P says:

Yea I fell for it. Oh well. Live and learn. No big deal though. Could not get through anyway. Just went back to sleep.

  5. avatar Really? says:

They had more traffic than their site could handle. It happens.

    1. avatar Evan says:

Yep, sounds more like being unable to handle the demand and less like deliberately screwing the customer.

Bigger, more high profile sites than Buds have had this happen to them.

    2. avatar Throm says:

Effectively what occurred was a bunch of people hitting F5 to be the first to get the deal DDOS’s their site. This isn’t a case of bait and switch so much as overloading what their servers were able to handle.

But what are you going to do…people gonna people.

  6. avatar PeterC says:

The annual convocation of the WahWah Sisterhood is once again upon us.

  7. avatar Tom in Oregon says:

    Bummer.
I did my “happy birthday to me” shopping last night.
Got me a rifle rest for my camera tripod and a Clark Fork Leather chest holster for the G-20.

  8. avatar Alex says:

BUds has started deleting all the posts on their Facebook page and now made it so that you are unable to post. Looks like they are censoring and going into damage control mode.

    F*** them

  9. avatar Tom jones says:

Who cares? Stop trying to buy crappy 50 dollar saterday night specials.

    1. avatar Lance Goodthrust says:

      *Saturday*

      1. avatar Jus Bill says:

Tom Jones is a singer, not a speller.

      2. avatar Hannibal says:

Gee, good thing you pointed out that typo/misspelling otherwise we’d never have figured out what he meant. You get an A!

    2. avatar nazshooter says:

Since when is a quality CZ75 clone a Saturday Night Special?

    3. avatar Tom Jefferson says:

What if a “saterday” night special is all you can afford?? Not everybody is a multi-millionaire, award winning singer and television personality with hits such as “Why, Why, Why Delilah!!” Shame on you, Tom Jones! Shame, I say!

    4. avatar John Page says:

Actually, Tom, if you knew anything about the Turkish guns, you would know that they are well made and accurate. The CZ clones are hard to beat in value. The particular one that was selling for $99, the Canik S-120 is a clone of the CZ 75, is all steel, and very accurate. So don’t spout off about things you are ignorant of. TIA

  10. avatar Noishkel says:

Pity… I would have enjoyed that shotgun. Even if I had to tinker with it for days to get it to run. I actually kind of like doing that anyway.

  11. avatar former water walker says:

Seriously has anyone used Buds layaway for the $ challenged like me? 10% down and 180days to pay on lots of guns/and free shipping-but not if I can’t trust them.

    1. avatar John Fritz - HMFIC says:

That damn Buds layaway feature is the crack cocaine of gun buying.

I typically have at least one gun (usually more) in process with them.

Of course always in the back of my mind is the possibility that I’ll wake up one day and discover that Buds/mah-money are both gone. Seen it happen elsewhere. More than once.

  12. Bought two guns from Buds. Traded in one on a new one and got a fair trade in value. Put another one in lawaway for awhile. Never had a problem with them. So their website went down on the busiest shopping day, shit happens. Quit whining and deal with it, or go elswhere.

    1. avatar JD says:

no, they advertised something for a stupid cheap price and then switched the price to triple what it was advertised as.

      1. avatar Corey says:

I as well woke up early and spent 2 hours trying to navigate the website. I realized that the first page of the cyber deals they had the emperor shot gun for 189. However if and when you could navigate to the second page the gun was 50 dollars. That to me was a deceptive way to advertise the product. However after trying to just be able to put something in my cart for 2 hours I gave up. Later on I wanted to send ab email expressing my concerns on how the Black Friday deals were handled turned out they aren’t accepting any emails. As well around 9 I finally saw the gun say sold out wanted to check it one more time and it was removed from the site

  13. avatar Joseph Garrett says:

    Open letter i sent them,

    Hello there,
My name is Joseph Garrett and i live in Juneau, Alaska. I got up at 3am my time in order to try and get ready with logging into your website and making sure i could expediently get to your deals when they came online. I had nothing but problems. I was able to add the emperor shotgun and canik 55 in my cart but was not able to continue where i needed to input my FFL information.

Now i understand there is a lot of people trying to get onto your site and having it be bogged down, but that website was down from 0750 EST to about 0915 EST and that website was plain unnavigable. Conveniently enough once the website was back up and running perfectly, your three doorbuster deals were out of stock. Let me ask you this, why is it that right then and there your doorbusters are out of stock when NOBODY could use your website? It doesnt make sense. I started looking at your facebook posts to see if others had this problem, and after a few hours noticed that one, no one has heard of anyone actually getting one of these, and two, you deleted all the posts about this. It almost seems like you are trying to sweep this under the rug, and three, you then deleted any posts you had of black friday deals on these items. That is downright suspicious.

This is the second time ive been burned by BGS. I have ordered from you in the past and the last time i had, I ordered a Canik55 from you. It said it had adjustable sights, and had a chrome barrel. The picture AND your website showed that. when it came, it had neither. I called you guys up and you offered me 25$ off of my next purchase with you guys. Is this bait and switch tactic becoming a thing?
I want to hope that this is a big misunderstanding with you guys but with everything I am seeing i am beginning to wonder. I am hoping there is away you can make it right for us. Is there?

    1. avatar Bud's Sucks Wang says:

Very well said!!! They have lost all of my business for sure. I actually just went to CDNN and stocked up, They have Legit BF deals unlike Bud’s!

  14. avatar Jason says:

The problem is not what happened, but how it was not handled. No explanation, they just started deleting things from their Facebook page, including the sales and comments in regards to them.

    1. avatar Barry says:

They deleted three of my comments. They’ve also now disabled the “Posts by Others” option on their FB, so nobody can post any more comments. Looks like they’ve deleted everything (even their own posts) from the last 48 hours.

    2. avatar K says:

Some of the FB posts that were deleted:

Ryan Huffer SO the $99 Canikes will be on Cyber Monday also? Want to get one for my daughter.

But they have lost me as a customer permanently. I will be reporting this company to the better business bureau and suggests others do the same.

The fact that the $99 price was a complete lie, or the fact that your website doesn’t work at the time you said the sale was supposed to start. Ron Polland Forget this sh*t. I would not be surprised to learn that they sold them out at the store. I tried getting through early, at 7am, which I did, so that I could refresh the site right at 8am – which I did. I saw the ads for the Emperor Shotgun and Canik S-120 that had “Black Friday” emblazoned on them and when they were also marked at $49 and $99. I quickly selected them and they showed up in my cart at the sale prices.

But, then Bud’s server crashed before I could get to Checkout and stayed crashed for 30 minutes to an hour, but occasionally (and teasingly) it popped back to the home page. clicking on the Checkout link showed the server down again. Going back the the home page and trying other links, like Cart, or My Account, also sent me to a “Sorry, this web site is down” error page.

By the time I was able to get back into my Cart, the prices had “magically” reverted back to their pre-Black Friday amounts of $189 and $339.

Matt Kaarlela so if this is going to happen again on monday… is there any way those of us who tried to buy today can pre-order? I have spent over 2 hours now trying to buy one of those $99 canik 9mm handguns and have had nothing but frustration with the website freezing or crashing. I am trying to give Buds the benefit of the doubt about this but sure looks suspicious.

out and say, “sorry all sold out at that price” even though they didn’t sell
any, or maybe one to some buddy of theirs so they can say they sold for that price, but really had no intention to actually do so.

I had a few issues with budsgunshop.com this morning, but waiting a few minutes and refreshing my browser and/or clearing my cache solved the issue for me. I have never bought a gun on-line before, but decided to try it today of all days. Prior to today, I went ahead and called buds to ensure that the item that I wanted to order was in stock, price was accurate, and since the picture did not match the description, I had some questions, and the very helpful customer service representative was able to look up all of the information for me such as length of pull, overall length, weight, whether or not the item came with a rail, etc. During this phone call, I was also advised that buds does not charge sales tax nor shipping if you are out of state.

So, I went ahead and placed my order, selected my dealer for delivery, and away I went. When it arrives at my dealer, I will need to pay a $30 transfer fee, but that is the way it is. I received the e-mail confirming my order within a few minutes.

So far, my experience with them has been positive. The transaction is not yet complete, and I cannot say how satisfied I will be with the overall experience until I have the item in my hot little hands.

The item I ordered was not a black friday item, so my mileage and others may vary.

  16. avatar wayne says:

Buds usually has higher prices than a few other sites. I only use them for price comparison. They cheesed me off back in 2012 almost as bad as CTD.

    Buds can pound sand.

  17. avatar JC says:

The biggest complaint and concern regarding the whole Bud’s fiasco this morning was what happened AFTER you were finally able to get through all the traffic and get the items in your cart. Everyone (that I saw, which was A LOT) that was able to get the items in their cart and make it to checkout were not able to complete the transactions due to having the site shut down on them at the final step. Then when making back to their cart to try again, were met with an Out Of Stock message. Even after they had already reserved the items in their cart. I own A LOT of firearms and have been dealing with online sources for awhile so I figured something was bound to happen. But everything I saw this morning, including how Buds responded to the situation on Facebook, was really sketchy and not very professional. Just my $0.02.

  18. avatar Snozzallos says:

Wait wait WAITAMINUTE. Are we reporting that a website… Was down… On Black Frisday… Maybepossiblykinda due to high interwebz traffic through their site? because this never happens? Ever?

    #slownewsday.

    1. avatar Chris S says:

I think the complaint is more about when the site did come back online, none of their advertised deals were listed. And given the length of time for the outage it doesn’t appear that they were ever active. Thus the accusations of wrong doing.

      But… I don’t know. I didn’t try to buy anything from them. I enjoyed my sleep. 🙂

  19. avatar WAJJr says:

They have gotten too big and no longer care about customer service. I have done quite a bit of business with them. I tried to order a Beretta 92S police trade in. The said I couldn’t buy because it has a high capacity magazine and I live in a state where 10rds is the limit. I asked if they’d ship without a magazine they said no; I asked if I could buy a 10 round magazine and they can keep the hi-cap mag they said no. I asked why and they said it was because the mags and guns are serialized and that ATF checks to see if hi cap guns are being sold to lo cap states and some other bs… no more budsgunshop.com for me

  20. avatar marco says:

I’m sorry $70 for a transfer is redicilous for a transfer here its $30 tops and we even have a shop that does free FFL transfers for all customers

  21. avatar Engine 2150 says:

What made it worse was I emailed and talked to them and it even was escalated to Eric a customer service supervisor and was basically told go fly a kite and take my business elsewhere.

  22. avatar emfourty gasmask says:

Tried it but couldn’t get past the FFL info page. Before I knew it, they were gone.

  23. avatar gregory says:

I spoke to someone Bud’s. I was advised of WEB issues due to over 10,000 people on their site at one time. I started seeing the problem when 6,400 people were on at one time.

    1. avatar Barry says:

I refreshed about a dozen times and the counter was pretty steady at around 600. That’s ridiculous.

  24. avatar No Thanks Bud says:

Most of the commentors on here have no idea what they are talking about. This is pure bait and switch. They showed out of stock on those items the entire time because they never had any intention of honoring those prices. They have plenty of Caniks in stock at $329, but never had any at $99.

The main reason why everyone is so upset it because they offered no explanation or apology and instead simply deleted hundreds of negative comments left by angry customers. One ad scan had almost 900 comments before they were all removed. Buds even went so far as to remove the posts related to the doorbuster guns from facebook and their site. Does this sound like the proper way to run a business to you?

  25. avatar Stinkeye says:

If you’re old enough to buy a handgun, you should be old enough to know that an ad offering a $300 pistol for $99 is a bait-and-switch.

  26. avatar Don1974 says:

Bud’s does bait and switch? Hello McFly you didn’t know that! Probably better off anyhow. That $99 Canik they were advertising will be about $300 by the time you check out. Your looking at a 50% fee for using a credit card, debit card, money order, cash, treasury bonds, returnable soda cans, gold, silver, plasma and whatever else you try to use as payment. Then there will be a $150 shipping because the gun was shipped out on a day that ends in “y”. Finally there will be a fee of $100 for the pleasure of them letting you do business with Bud’s.

  27. avatar Don says:

Much ado about nothing, they’re just a victim of their own success, and possibly a poor choice in web server providers or credit card gateways…. as others have said, you couldn’t get theb page you wanted up, or couldn’t complete a transaction on the busiest shopping day of the year in the US? Have a latte and chill, if you’re still upset take your business elsewhere…. Me, I think there’s still a slice of pumpkin pie in the fridge…

  28. avatar oliver says:

It wasn’t just the website traffic. I tried the codes for both the canik and the tisas pistols. Always got the message code does not exist if the site didn’t crash.

  29. avatar Bob Nichols says:

It’s good to know someone is talking about this while not being on the Buds fb page. It’s obvious they are managing that heavily in an attempt to do damage control for the, at best, shady sale this morning. I’ve had several posts and comments deleted by them. Here is one….

Being 55, computer literate since 1976 and internet savvy since first logging on in 1990 I can say this “sale” was poorly handled and executed. It wasnt due to internet traffic, web path was clear to Buds. It was poor planning. Horrible execution and disrespect to customers by not having some sort of notification in place as to when inventory “ran out” or how long the sale would last. Now, deleating posts and comments to make themselves look better. Cry baby? No. Potential customer who expects at least some professionalism and courtesy from an established company? Yes.

I filed a report with the Ky BBB.

  30. avatar JD says:

what happened was buds advertised ridiculous deals on 3 guns. they advertised a 12ga pump for $49 a canik cz75 for $99 and a tisas 9mm for $99, i was up early to try and get a jump on it and fought with the website for over an hour. what they did is they switched the price from $99 and $49 to $329 and $189. so the guns that were on sale were in stock but just not for the advertised price. i got the 9mm in my cart and hit checkout and the site magically went down and when it came back up it said sold out. so i went for the 12ga, got it in my cart and the same thing happened. i would have went to a real gun shop but Budsgunshop said on their facebook they had alot of them in stock and even expected to be sold out by 9am. the whole thing was shady and even after literally thousands of comments buds acts like nothing happened and deleted everything. if buds didnt advertise pretty much free guns thousands of people would have went to real gun stores so every loses.

  31. avatar Scott Jackson says:

Just to give a heads up, The dishonest people at Bud’s Gun Shop have deleted ALL comments on their Facebook page about how they screwed people over and how they continue to not care about doing so. This proves how shady their business practices are. Attempting to silence the customers that they screwed is pathetic.

  32. avatar paul says:

tried to log in to cabellas this morning and their website was down due to overload also.

  33. avatar Indiana Tom says:

Well, at least the local veterinarian was open for the dog’s checkup.

  34. avatar gregory says:

    Well, I am happy, I purchased a Tisas 1911 A1, from Bud’s today for 369.00.

  35. avatar Corey says:

So the question is do you think they will do anything or just ignore the problem altogether

  36. avatar Buckeyecopperhead says:

I have never purchased a Bud’s gun, and seeing how this thing went down, not sure if I would in the future. Not because of purported website problems, or because it stupidly advertised deals that it couldn’t fulfill, but primarily because the company seems to have thrown the entire snafu into the memory hole. This by itself could cost the company some business.

A statement to the effect of “We screwed up, we’re sorry, here are some other good deals to make things right” would be a good starting point.

    1. avatar John Page says:

Buds will continue to prosper because they offer some items that are $298 and up on 90 days layaway. They have a bunch of items that qualify for 180 days layaway. They give free shipping and life time warranties for about $15 on guns that othewise would have a one year warranty. Yes, you have to know what you are ordering, and if not sure, email them. Yes, you should inspect your weapon at the FFL and if it’s not right, refuse to sign for it and Buds will pay the shipping back and get you another one, refund, etc. But if you sign and then check when you get home and it’s messed up, you will send it to the manufacturer for warranty work. I have found that they stand by their word. I bought a Tisas 1911 that is usually a dependable pistol, but I got a lemon. They refunded my money in full just as they promised. That included the insurance I paid and the extra warranty.

      1. avatar Heathen says:

Yep, I’ve bought from Bud’s before & will again.

Now back to the Butthurt Brigade and their BBB threats. It’s my understanding that the BBB rates their member business partners. It has no enforcement power.

  37. avatar Karlan says:

I finally got the items in my cart after 15 minutes just to log in. I had book marked all the deals. Went to checkout, ffl page froze up, went back, they had marked 2 out of stock, and replaced the other one multiple times with the $349 version. Seems like a scam because the two sku s were obviously linked. Also the black Friday item listing never said “out of stock”. If it was real they would have created a new item with an inventory and price, which would be reflected on every facet of their website. Instead they wrote a couple static pages for the listing…..

Seems shady, however I’m only saying that because I didn’t get one.

  38. avatar John Page says:

I saw the preview from Slickguns and called Buds. They denied they were having a Black Friday sale, but said if they did, they would send me an email. They did send me an email after midnight on Black Friday, previewing the $99 Canik price which they had previously denied. I knew that their server would not hold up as it gives trouble on regular days. They simply need to upgrade their servers. They are having another small cyber Monday sale, starting at 8 am on Monday. I’m sure the servers will crash again. Maybe they will get it right next year.

  39. avatar Darrin Everton says:

I don’t know about anyone else, but I managed to score 2 semi-auto handguns and a 12 ga pump shotgun for $250. When I bragged about it everyone called me a liar and accused me for working for Bud’s Gun Shop. Joke’s on them.

    1. avatar John Page says:

Congrats on being one of the lucky dogs! Sounds like you made out like a bandit.

  40. avatar Tim S. says:

I’ve purchased a lot of stuff from Bud’s over the last couple of years. They’ve always treated me well, the stuff was shipped quickly, and I always got a good price. People piss and moan about the “cash only” price, but no one is keeping them from sending in a money order or a check to get the discount. Whiners gonna whine.

  41. avatar Tessius says:

Well they issued a statement on facebook, but it’s just as bad as not saying nothing. Apparently they only intended for the Black Friday Deals for “Existing Customers.”
The deals were not intended for “New Customers” according to their PR guy (Rex.)

Is it just me or do a lot of Gun Shops/Retailers lately have piss poor customer service and public relations or none at all?

Seriously if you run a business regardless of field you’re supposed to have decent or good customer service and public relations. It amazes me that none of these Gun Shops and Retailers have never taken a business course at all…

  42. Tessius, I agree with you. This kind of stunt that Bud’s pulled is the exact reason why I decided to start my own gun shop about a year ago & start our website. I was sick of dealing with all the incompetent, currently existing online firearms retailers. It’s shocking how poor the customer service ratings are for all of the “market leaders”… see: https://www.preppergunshop.com/buy-with-confidence

      That’s the spirit!
While it’s a bit too cold for me up there, I’ll have a look one of these days.

Personally I’d like to start my own shop, but I’m afraid i’d be overshadowed by the bigger shops like Palmetto State Armory here in SC. So I’m looking to go the further route and start manufacturing instead, mostly making AR parts and 1911’s, I’ll probably branch out from there, but that’s my main focus for now.

I think it’s no surprise that site may be down on days like Black Friday when they have a lot of visitors. But of course they need to be ready for that.
