Chicago Doesn’t Heart Laser Sights

Tomorrow's Laser Sights
Gary from handgunlaw.us writes: “Seems Chicago has this ordinance against lasers. They have informed their police to confiscate any firearm with a laser sight even if the person has a valid permit/license. Cicero, Thornton and Roselle, Illinois also have such ordinances banning laser sights. Are these ordinances illegal under IL preemption? Preemption states handguns and ammo, not accessories so a court case will take place. But until then, IL being IL and Chicago being Chicago, I see nothing but problems.” . . .

From the Windy City’s anti-gun ordinance:

8-20-060 Possession of a Laser Sight Accessory, Firearm Silencer or Muffler.
(a) It is unlawful for any person to carry, possess, display for sale, sell or otherwise transfer any laser sight accessory, or a firearm silencer or muffler.
(b) The provisions of this section shall not apply to any members of the armed forces of the United States, or the organized militia of this or any other state, or peace officers, to the extent that any such person is otherwise authorized to acquire or possess a laser sight accessory, or firearm silencer or muffler, and is acting within the scope of his duties.
(c) Any laser sight accessory, or firearm silencer or muffler, carried, possessed, displayed or sold in violation of this section is hereby declared to be contraband and shall be seized by and forfeited to the city.

An advisory letter from Chicago PD to LEOs can be found here (pdf), with the relevant section on page 8:

E. Seizure and Forfeiture of Firearms
Members will only enforce MCC 8-20-250 “Seizure and Forfeiture of Firearms” under the following circumstances:
[…]
3. the seized object is a laser sight, firearm silencer, or muffler.

Because the last thing the City of Chicago wants to see is civvies using a tool that make firearms easier or more accurate to shoot.

  4. It’s just another ordinance that no one will pay much attention too let alone know about. While I’m all for the average citizen lasering up, the last thing we need is gangbangers with better accuracy. Their shitty aim and shot placement is what helps keep the murder rate where it’s at. That and timely, quality medical care.

    1. avatar lolinski says:

Wouldn’t it be better if criminals had good accuracy? That way they would hit their intended target(s) without hitting innocent people around, especially when it comes to drive-bys.

      1. avatar NEIOWA says:

Perhaps more productive training up the popo 1st.

      2. avatar Blue says:

This policy/ordinance isn’t going to effect criminals . . . well actually it is . . . it will give them a safer work environment.

  5. avatar Jay1987 says:

Hey they wanna make sure you can’t blind the crackhead jacking your tv set and raping your family before you shoot him they are also cutting down on that pesky thing called accuracy when engaging said crackhead its population control they want you to miss and hit a kid so they can wave the bloody shirt and pass bans again.

  6. avatar Brian says:

“The provisions of this section shall not apply to any members of the armed forces of the United States, or the organized militia of this or any other state”

Well, since Heller stated we’re all members of the militia, I guess Chicago has a problem.

    1. avatar twency says:

Well, no. Heller did NOT say that everyone is part of the “organized militia”, the term used in the Chicago ordinance.

  7. avatar Rev. Maurice Pompitous says:

What, too many cats being shot while their owners were annoying them with laser sights?

    Simple harassment by sore losers.

  8. avatar OODAloop says:

Yeah, I’d confiscate them too. If that “LASER” pictured is an sample of what they’ll seize, it’s way TOO Big to be mounted on a firearm. It should really be attached to a shark or ill-tempered Sea Bass…

    1. avatar Hal J. says:

That laser was bleeding-edge technology back in the ’70s…!

  9. avatar racer88 says:

Next they’ll ban corrective eyewear while in possession of a gun.

    Idiots.

    1. avatar sagebrushracer says:

      ^ this times 1000.

  10. avatar Jay1987 says:

Ok one comment on the laser in the picture… would you like some gun with that laser jeebus that thing is huge why would they mount it on a pistol???

    1. avatar Hal J. says:

Based on what I recall of laser technology in the 20th Century, I’m guessing the article is from roughly 1978 or so.

  11. avatar Pascal says:

Do they wake up and ask each other “what is something stupid we can do today”

I guess now that Chicago has shutdown several schools, they have enough money for stupid lawsuites

  12. avatar dwb says:

is that the only penalty, confiscation?

its called concealed carry, for a reason, you know. The only time they will see it is when you need to pull it out to shoot the baddie, in which case confiscation of a $100 laser relative to the threat of imminent harm should not impact the decision to have one. Add it to the legal bills you may or may not face.

In fact, if confiscation of a $100 laser is the only negative consequence of pulling out the M1911 to shoot the baddie, consider yourself blessed.

    1. avatar Mark N. says:

But the problem, as I read the article, is that they don’t stop at the laser, but take the gun too.

      1. avatar dwb says:

part (c) indicates to me only the accessory is confiscated. In reality, if you are in a shooting, the police will take your gun for evidence anyway and you may or may not get it back after a lengthy period where they investgate.

  13. avatar janitor says:

that thing reminds me of the movie “cobra” i think sly was rocking one.

  14. avatar Scottlac says:

What about rubberized grips to help hold it better? Tritium night sights? We just can’t have people hitting what they aim at.

  15. avatar Dave says:

You could use pillows to muffle gun shots.

Does that mean no pillows for Chicago?

    1. avatar sagebrushracer says:

only the privileged and the elite can have a pillow, and you’d better be a big contributor the the re-election campaign too.

  16. avatar Mike Crognale says:

SIGH! There’s always something. Sounds like the thing to do is use one of those lasers that replace the rod in your 1911s. Not immediately apparent.

  17. avatar hideya2a says:

Chicago is just a gun snob who believes lasers are a crutch. Chicago says “spend more time learning shooting fundamentals, Hollywood.”

  18. avatar ChuckN says:

Maybe Chicago figures if they allow LEOs to confiscate the sights then
re-purpose them for cops; they won’t have to spend time and money
on something as superfluous as training.

    1. avatar Troutbum5 says:

Maybe they can send them to the NYPD. Seems like they need all the help they can get.

  19. avatar Allen Smith says:

    Shitcago has all the answers.
Same old same old, the corrupt mayor thinks he runs the state.
Anyone wanting to understand dirty politics would do well to research the Chicago political machine and Illinois long history of dirty criminal governors.
The best move I ever made was leaving IL and I ain’t ever going back.

  20. avatar g says:

Is it weird that I want that laser?

  21. avatar Lars says:

Ever notice the states and cities with sensible less restrictive gun laws have the least gun violence?

We have to rid liberals from power, if given enough years they will eventually ban the powder used in ammo, or they will start registering barrels and numerous parts of a firearm to make them more expensive and restricted, or they will super-tax ammo, or they will ban all guns period. They have so many things they could and will go after to stop citizens from being armed. It’s obvious the goal is disarmament. Not a conspiracy, just reality. All liberals, I use to be one, are anti-gun. Some may support gun rights individually, but they also in turn support those in power that support gun control. You cannot be a liberal, you cannot vote liberal if you support gun rights. Not saying the republicans are the answer, they are mostly evil and corrupt as well, many are religious zealots, but libertarian is the way to go and I hope most of you feel the same. If our group, the gun rights folks, cannot stand undivided, we will lose the war.

    Here is the next fight-

Hopefully that will be the size of the lazer that CPD is looking for and the one that is on my XD9 sub compact is too small to be noticed.

Nah, that dog will probability not hunt, and I’ll be busted traveling through one day.

I’ll hope for the best though.

    Just my $.02

  23. avatar John Fritz says:

So what happens if you stand in a town where lasers are legal and you shine your laser into a town where it’s prohibited?

    1. avatar Matt in FL says:

You get arrested for making a terroristic threat, because you were clearly threatening to shoot someone from two towns over.

  24. avatar Bob7 says:

Really? Can this city really be that stupid? I guess I already know the answer. Yes, they can be that stupid.

  25. avatar BillF says:

Rahm probably thinks the laser is the lethal part.

    1. avatar Michael C says:

I’d love to see what they would do if a bunch of unarmed people walked around holding laser sights (turned off, of course). The lawsuit that followed that mass confiscation would certainly be interesting. It would be hilarious to see the city trying to justify the confiscation of a firearms aiming device in the absence of a firearm to aim. Also, I wonder if normal laser pointers are legal in Chicago, if anyone gets my drift;)

Well guess I’m not going to take my Bodyguard 380 in the car to Ill, have to pack my 40 when I visit my sister.

    1. avatar Rev. Maurice Pompitous says:

Only in Chicago and the other enlightened cities mentioned in the article. In the rest of the state it’s just the normal ridiculous gun laws that apply. We were in downstate Illinois a couple of weeks ago for a Guardianship hearing for a family member and there was no end of comments about guns from the natives.
We flew into St. Louis and rented a car. The guy at the counter asked where we were going. We said Illinois, he said “Why?” and laughed. Then he said “The land of crazy ass gun laws”. Then on to a restaurant in Illinois and it came up that we were from Texas. The waitress said “Oh, the land of the free. You can’t carry your gun here but those jerks can” and pointed to a table of LEOs in plain clothes. Bad tippers I guess. The best one was at the hearing. The Illinois lawyer we hired showed us a form that basically said our family member wouldn’t be buying any firearms and said “I always have to explain this carefully to Texans” with a little giggle. I said “I get it, she won’t be passing a background check. I’ll send you a copy of the Constitution when I get home, if you have any questions about the 2d amendment give me a call and I’ll explain it carefully”. End of friendly lawyer/client conversation.

This is another “F*** you” to lawful gun owners. Just like the NFA crap they wanna change. It’s asinine.

  31. avatar Jus Bill says:

Maybe because you can use it to temporarily blind an uparmored punk? They did it in Egypt.

  32. avatar Nigil says:

I was listening to the radio and heard Chief of Police McCarthy talking about lasers on guns. He said the ordinance came to pass after an officer was killed with a gun that had a laser sight. He said, and I quote: that “these things just make guns more accurate, do we really want people out there to be so accurate?” as if it was a rhetorical question. Well, it is a rhetorical questions, just not the way the thinks it is.

  33. avatar Steve Davis says:

I think Chicago just wants to make sure the criminals still have some sort of advantage.
