Petition: Apply US Gun Control Regulations to Syrian Rebels

Syrian "rebels" (courtesy worldtribune.com)

I love my senator. After President Obama announced plans to arm Syrian rebels with fully automatic machine guns, Ted Cruz tweeted “Anyone know if President Obama intends to perform background checks on the Syrian rebels before providing them weapons?” And it took off like a gunshot. There are already a couple petitions asking that President Obama have the Syrian rebels pass the same background checks that U.S. citizens currently have to pass to purchase a firearm, including the 6+ month wait for NFA tax stamps. Oh, and that whole post-1986 machine gun ban too. Here’s hoping that the petition gets enough signatures that he actually has to give an answer to these.

    Ted Cruz for President!

Born in Canada, may be a problem. May be a supreme court case. His mother is a U.S. citizen so technically he was naturally born here.

      1. avatar C says:

The canada issue has been addressed. A legal non-issue, but they’d run attack ads about it.

      2. avatar gej88 says:

If he was registered as a “US citizen born abroad” certificate from the State Department, then he is a natural born US citizen. Of course, he is also a natural born Canaidan too, since they have birth right citizenship. Military kids that were born overseas fall in this catagory, like John McCain and my niece. The Constitution doesn’t say you have to be born here, just a naturally born US citizen. The issue came up with Mitt’s dad, who was born in Mexico, when he ran for the GOP nomination in 1968.

      3. avatar Gtfoxy says:

If you apply the current eligability status for his part, why the heck not.

      4. avatar Sam C says:

Not a problem. McCain was allowed to run.

      5. avatar Rich Grise says:

Well, just look at who’s in office now. Obviously, the citizenship requirement has been rescinded.

  2. avatar Jeff the Griz says:

Oh going to sign as soon as I can get to a computer, smart phones are only good for so much, not everything.

    1. avatar CA.Ben says:

I signed it in my smartphone, only internet I have right now. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

  3. avatar Bret says:

I’m willing to let it slide if they get rid of NFA regs.

  4. avatar neiowa says:

Cruz looks to be the real deal. As Rand Paul and Marco Rubio have run off at the mouth with idiocy. Have to wait a few months to see how he holds up. A very bright well spoken Constitutionalist.

Likely darkhorse Presidential nominee in 16. As Iowa activist I’ll forecast he will do very well in Iowa caucus/straw poll but the RINO establishment will be out to cut his throat at everyturn. RINOs be as big a problem as the dems. May well shake out as a RINO vs Radical Republican (bing it) primary contest..

    1. avatar Accur81 says:

Maybe I missed the “idiocy” of Rand Paul amidst all the Obama administration scandals.

  5. avatar Mark N. says:

Reporter: Mr. President, how is it lawful and justifiable to give weapons and ammunition to Syrian rebels who are fighting to overthrow their lawfully constituted government, yet unjustifiable, even immoral, to allow American citizens to lawfully purchase and possess the same weapons?

Mr. President: We wouldn’t want to give American citizens any ideas.

    1. avatar Joke & Dagger says:

If our current American regime ran Syria, they would ruthlessly extinguish all dissent.

      1. avatar Ralph says:

You mean like with surveillance of phone records and drone strikes and cracking a reporter’s computer? Our government would never do stuff like that.

    2. avatar GS650G says:

They didn’t see a problem arming mexican gangs, these guys are far enough away that the guns probably won’t end up in Texas.

  6. avatar In Memphis says:

It will get enough signatures, no doubt. The response will be from some aid, to the effect of…

… to conclude, machine guns are weapons of war and this is a war. Additionaly these are not US citizens blah, blah, blah.

  7. avatar MurrDog says:

Hopefully there is a cool down period as well. Can’t have rebels flying off the handle at the regime.

  8. avatar William Burke says:

    SIGN THE PETITION, folks!

I have one bone to pick with Cruz: he voted in favor of the “Monsanto Protection Act” (whatever it was actually called). Something silly like “states’ rights”, as if states’ rights had ANYTHING to do with it! BAH!!!

  9. avatar Conrad says:

Heh, it’s not visible in the list of petitions… you need the direct link to get to it… 😐

    1. avatar Conrad says:

      … and I just learned about the 150 signature rule… 😐

  10. avatar LSUTigersFan says:

One more vote here for President Cruz!!

  11. avatar JeffR says:

Can Illinois trade Durbin for Cruz? I know it sounds like a bad trade for Texas, but just think of all the fun that you can have with tar and feathers.

  12. avatar Chris says:

Why bother with background checks for the Syrians? Background checks were done for all the Fast & Furious guns and we see where those guns ended up :-).

  13. avatar Chris says:

Oh the NFA thing makes me wonder if the Syrians will setup an FFL like the Mexicans did, and if that will be the largest source of leaked guns, like the Mexican FFL is.

  14. avatar Bob says:

PLEASE GO SIGN THE PETITION! (yes, I’m shouting)

  15. avatar Pascal says:

    signed!

Someone should create a petition for the M1 Garand’s from South Korea.

    1. avatar Eric says:

Some Senator or representative lady ( I forget the name ) us introducing a bill to allow the m1 garands

  16. avatar Lance says:

JWM said it I want this man CIC in 2016 or now. Like to see Obama trying to have Islamist murders pass background checks when a CO farmer cant get a 30rd AR mag.

  17. avatar raincrow says:

The president should arm the free citizens of Chicago.

    1. avatar jwm says:

What, there’s free citizens in Chicago? I musta missed that memo.

      1. avatar raincrow says:

If we can save one free citizen the effort must be made.

  18. avatar Mike says:

173 signatures so far. Spread the word to all the gun related forums

  19. avatar Wassim Absood says:

The petition should be for the opposite….

  20. avatar alex says:

Why does Obama want to arm these rebels? What caused this civil war between Syria’s government and the people? I’m sorry guys I am behind in world news and find it very hard to find valuable information anywhere I look.

  21. avatar Matt in FL says:

Sign on online petition? Next you’ll be wanting me to “Like” it on Facespace.

  22. avatar Fyrewerx says:

Amazing photo… all three rebel dudes are practicing good trigger safety.

  23. avatar Kyle says:

Signed and promoted. Find it funny I have to give them an email to sign it, the NSA all ready has my info.

  24. avatar Rich says:

A natural born citizen according to the Supreme Court is on born of parents that are both US citizens. That as pposed to one born of just one US citizen parent. It stops the splitting of an individual that favors two different countries.

  25. avatar Ken says:

Petition signed. The only American guns going into Syria should be firmly in the grasp of American Soldiers or Marines. These revolutionaries have no particular love for us; they are likely to give our ammo back at 2400 fps when we do have to intervene.

  26. avatar dook says:

    Signed for Cruz 😀

  27. avatar EagleScout87 says:

Could this petition backfire on us? Will the White House turn around and point to this that Americans favor Gun Control so strongly they want to impose it on Syrian Rebels as well? Maybe we shouldn’t be so hasty with this one……

  28. avatar BDub says:

I love how the signature requirement is now 100K – 4 times what it was before the whole “we are all seceding” petitions, hehe.

  29. avatar Michael B. says:

I’d sign it but I could do without an IRS audit.

  30. First time signing one of these things. Point to that guy who posted about guns making one a better American via prodding to participate in the political process.

  31. avatar conceal7 says:

WE the AMERICAN people must pay x amount & go through x amount of hoops to get any type of firearm in this country but our “president of the united states” hands them out like candy to fighting rebels in other countries. where does that make sense to any one ? so if i don’t live in America assault rifle good ? but if i live in America assualt rifle bad ? did i wake up in bizzaro world ? or just the current American nightmare ?

  32. avatar Dave - WI says:

Went and signed the petition yesterday and went back to see how it was doing today… It has fewer signatures today than it did yesterday. I smell fish…
