NRA Prez James Porter (courtesy theweek.com)

“There’s more to the leadership of the National Rifle Association than the gun-crazy Wayne LaPierre, and it’s getting offensively worse,”a  nydailynews.com op ed opines. “By profession, [newly elected NTA Prez James] Porter is an Alabama lawyer. Last June, he came to New York to speak about gun rights at the yearly meeting at the Wallkill Rod and Pistol Association, located in Orange County. Porter noted, believe it or not, that the NRA was actually founded in this state.” No way! Way! During his speech, the Southern gun rights advocate—who advocates for African Americans’ right to keep and bear arms—revealed himself to be a racist. Well, according to The Daily News . . .

“It was started by some Yankee generals who didn’t like the way my Southern boys had the ability to shoot in what we call the War of Northern Aggression. Now, y’all might call it the Civil War, but we call it the War of Northern Aggression down South.”

See what he didn’t do there? I suspect Porter was joking when he made this remark. You know; playing the dozens with his northern audience with a little friendly Southern – Yankee shooting-reated banter.

Anyone who thinks Porter wasn’t joking—that he’s a racist—should probably do a little Google searching to see if he’s ever made a racist statement before . .  .

I got nothing. The anonymous Daily News editorialist doesn’t see it that way. At all.

Only unreconstructed fans of the Confederate defense of slavery characterize the North as the party in the wrong in battling to eradicate America’s original sin and preserve the union. Implicitly, they believe that Abraham Lincoln should have stood idle in the face of barbaric evil.

Huh. I guess that whole “state’s rights” debate’s got nothing to do with it then. Anyway, political correctness is its; own reward when you’re trying to fine something, anything to characterize an organization as the enemy.

Especially when you’re preparing the ground for a violent conflict to come which, this writer believes, will culminate in the federal government labeling the NRA a terrorist group. (More on that in a future post). Defining the battlespace, I believe it’s called.

Read this in that context:

Way out on the fringe, he contended in the same 2012 speech that then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Attorney General Eric Holder were pushing for a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty to take American citizens’ guns away.

The man is poisonously nuts, and his stance on the Civil War is an affront to all Americans, black, white and other. The question can fairly be asked:

As it holds sacred an extreme reading of the Second Amendment, does the NRA also subscribe to the Civil War’s constitutional progeny, the Thirteenth, abolishing slavery; the Fourteenth, providing equal protection under state laws, and the Fifteenth, guaranteeing blacks the right to vote?

That’s flat-out inflammatory. Get ready for more. The NRA’s victory in Congress, its swelling membership (from four million to five million since Newtown), has statists spoiling for a fight. “This is only round one,” President Obama promised.

I’ll say this about that: Porter better bring his A game. He’s going to need it.

  1. ” extreme reading of the Second Amendment, ”

    “extreme”

    ..they keep using that word….
…I don’t think it means what they think it means….

    • If That’s racist, Then I am the most racist person to walk the face of this earth, hoooooo He said Yankee

    • “I want the Thieves’ Forrest emptied before I wed!”

      “It’s for the children…”

    • I want everyone to know right now that I am not a racist. However I am an Equal Opportunity Bigot! You show me that you are a moronic, backwater jerk, of ANY race, color or creed, and will become your EOB!

    • they know what it means. The United States has been using it to describe its enemies for a long time. Now, Americans are calling fellow Americans “extreme”. There’s no room for talk in such things.

    • To them any reading any source document is extreme, the correct way to them is to have the meaning dictated to you by someone else.

  2. Good piece. Thanks for clarifying Porter’s comments and the background context of his comments. The NY Daily News in print is only fit for lining bird cages.

    • But watch how many other Journalists {Journalists?} pick up the Porter is Racist Meme….its short, easy to remember and fits in the chosen narrative. The NRA must hit back on this immediately, preemptively and vigorously so as it does not become the accepted view of their new president. If you don’t believe this just remember how they were able to frame Dan Quayle, Sara Palin, Mitt Romney as dotes and idiots or evil capitalists and also have been able to keep Joe Biden from being a laughing stock for anyone other than knowledgeable readers of the daily news. It only matters what the press says about someone, not who they actually are.

  3. Please tell me exactly how he’s racist? Besides the fact that the civil war was NOT just about slavery ( I know it was a big factor ) but it seems like every time someone has even the slightest deviation from what these left leaning jackholes have as an opinion, instead of an open debate based on facts, they get all emotional and start calling you every name, baselessly of course, like a 3 year old child. ” If you don’t play my way, I’m taking my toys and going home…..AND I’m telling.”

      • Why has no one replied to this?

I would hope he would be that stupid. Gun rights advocates should know, an armed society will not let anyone own “colored” people ever again.

        • I very much appreciate the honesty of Mr. Porter. He’s a ‘gin blossem-nose’ red-neck racist confederate demon of hate, if there ever was one. We ( the intellectual African-Americans ) have known for some time now that some ( maybe even up to a third ) of white America still views us as less than human. Therefore, we expect ‘in the closet’ racist to occasionally rear their hate-filled minds. We also expect that if continue on this present path, hypothetically: the emancipation proclamation, and 13th. Amendment, could be rescinded. This could allow the evocation, and enforcing of states rights. Different states could, change their constitutions, thus, enabling the ‘formal’ reinstatement of both indentured servitude, slavery, or both. This could depend greatly on who’s leading this country at the time.

        • “Free Wood Post is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within FreeWoodPost.com are fiction, and presumably fake news.

Any resemblance to the truth is purely coincidental, except for all references to politicians and/or celebrities, in which case they are based on real people, but still based almost entirely in fiction.

FreeWoodPost.com is intended for a mature, sophisticated, and discerning audience.”

Unfortunately, judging by the comments to that article there (and now also here), the “mature and discerning audience” is sorely lacking these days. I mean, did you seriously believe that some big wig politico in US today would talk about “owning colored people”?

      • Yep. That is an undeniable description of what a class A number 1 RACIST is all right. That’s why no one addresses it. Only 6% of Southern whites owned slaves so once again the super rich have poor whites kissing their asses again, keeping the lower class white at black peoples’ throats so they won’t or care see how much they are being bent over, too. So many whites actually fall for the “white privilege” illusion and proudly stupidly feel they are deserving of the miniscule advantages the elites allow them. They are so susceptible to rhetoric that facts no longer matter as long as they are made to feel infringements are being made on their “God-given” white people privilege. That privilege sustains an ignorance so deep it blinds the resentment of their natural repulsion of programming that assures them they are better than the people they know are racially superior in spite of their subjugation and dehumanization. Whites are struggling mentally with ambiguous contradictions they can’t convert into sense so they convert it into hate against any and everyone who doesn’t look like them. It is their only reference to an imagined but effective assault against an equally ambiguous “right”. They are played to agree by not vocally disagreeing to unconstitutional rulings against Americans that are made to seem to protect them from “us”. It is working because of a vanity that assuages an inferiority borne of visual reality that hurts. The resulting unconscious pity creates a subliminal resentment that the super rich employs to enact policies beneficial to an enabling agenda. Whites are pawns to what’s coming and they can’t see it.

  4. “Gun-crazy”. And here I thought that was the point.

Somebody get him a historian, QUICK! Because slavery was NOT the primary reason that war was fought.

    • Liberals will die to defend the belief that the Civil War was fought over slavery and nothing else. History never suits the liberal. It only proves them wrong. Like their memory lapse over the fact that Lincoln was the first Republican president.

    • The southern states themselves disagree with you. Most of them have made public declarations of secession, wherein they list the reasons for it (in the spirit of the original Declaration of Independence). Slavery is on the top of the list in all of them. Yes, it’s wrapped in states rights’ verbiage – blah blah evil centralized government tramples all over our internal state matters, like slavery. Cry me a river.

Also, for state right proponents, they sure were quick to make slavery universally protected in the Confederate constitution (so no Confederate state could e.g. refuse to treat slaves on its territory as slaves). That tells you all you need to know about their priorities on states rights and slavery.

  5. For the love of God & Country, doesn’t ANYONE in the MSM study history beyond their 8th grade humanities class? There is so much wrong with that piece that it isn’t even worth picking apart.

    • Apparently you haven’t seen what they’re shoveling into kids’ heads in public schools.

  6. Slavery was already beginning to make its way out the door in the south in the 1860’s, popular support of it was waning. It was only a matter of time before the practice ended anyway. The war was about state’s rights. Lincoln wanted to own the nation and have the southern states play ball with the fed. The south told him to suck it. Lincoln tried to garner support to go to war to prevent secession but it was tough to come by. So, what does any power do to gain support from the masses? Heartstrings and bloody shirts. That is all the slavery issue was to the Civil War. Something everyone could get behind to destroy, though it was a mere blip on the radar as to reasons for the war. The writer of that article should probably do some historical study that doesn’t involve a modern day college campus. Anyone who thinks that all of those southerners who fought in the Civil War were fighting so the rich plantation owners could keep slaves is seriously deluded.

    • Well said. However, the victors write the history, and the story needs to make them the heroes.

    • Don’t feel like looking this up, but some conservative Nobel prize winning economist did an analysis and found that contrary to popular belief slavery was a highly functional economic system and would have continued without the intervention of the civil war. Also, he concluded that slaves in the south had materially better conditions than factory workers in the north.

    • The war was indeed over the issue of states’ rights. Specifically, the northern states accepted the status quo, which was that some states of the union were free states and some were slave states, and each set their own laws on how they treat slaves; and that free slaves are not obligated to enforce slave states’ laws on their territory.

Slave states, on the other hand, wanted slavery to be universally recognized. Which is why the constitution of CSA had very important slaveholder rights protected on the federal level, to avoid local states laws overriding them, such as:

“No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.”

“The citizens of each State shall be entitled to all the privileges and immunities of citizens in the several States; and shall have the right of transit and sojourn in any State of this Confederacy, with their slaves and other property; and the right of property in said slaves shall not be thereby impaired.”

“No slave or other person held to service or labor in any State or Territory of the Confederate States, under the laws thereof, escaping or lawfully carried into another, shall, in consequence of any law or regulation therein, be discharged from such service or labor; but shall be delivered up on claim of the party to whom such slave belongs; or to whom such service or labor may be due.”

“The Confederate States may acquire new territory; and Congress shall have power to legislate and provide governments for the inhabitants of all territory belonging to the Confederate States, lying without the limits of the several Sates; and may permit them, at such times, and in such manner as it may by law provide, to form States to be admitted into the Confederacy. In all such territory the institution of negro slavery, as it now exists in the Confederate States, shall be recognized and protected by Congress and by the Territorial government; and the inhabitants of the several Confederate States and Territories shall have the right to take to such Territory any slaves lawfully held by them in any of the States or Territories of the Confederate States.”

      So much for states’ rights.

  7. I like this guy, but the NRA needs to keep him away from any debating. Period. The man is not a debater in the way we need them. He is articulate in public speaking, but that is miles apart from going on piers morgan’s show and mopping the floor with him.
I truly wish that the NRA would start tapping the resources we’ve already got. How many of you guys saw young Ben Shapiro absolutely destroy piers morgan ? This kid is 21 or 22 years old. Yet, of all the pro-gun people piers brought on, in hopes of making our side look bad, Ben Shapiro absolutely destroyed morgan. Google up their little debate if you want to put a smile on your face.

I’m not with those who want “diversity” just for its own sake. But we’ve got to understand the tactics our enemy is using, and not just play defense constantly. We’ve need women saying “Why is it that YOU want women to be raped ?” or, “Why DON’T you want women to have the best possible means of defending their children from a group of home invaders ?”

We need a number of different faces out there doing battle. Between Wayne and this guy we don’t exactly have much in the way of passionate and persuasive speakers at the leadership level of the NRA. We need them badly.

    • Man, I truly enjoy watching Ben Shapiro intellectually bitch slap people on TV as well. It kind of restarted me into reading Breitbart. David Keene (The Last NRA Pres.) didnt see like too much of a sharp tounge debater either, which kind of made sense to me why Wayne LP did most of the talking, particularly on the morning TV circuit. I couldnt agree more on finding a more engaging and passionate speaker, this is still a battle for hearts and minds. As a younger member (under 30), I kind of wish they would choose a few slightly more youthful members to be constantly in front of a camera. Of course, the NRA News crew is awesome and MCN is the man but I dont think it reaches far enough as anything with NRA in the title never makes it past the internet.

  8. Original sin, preserve the union, sacred, barbaric evil…that’s some pretty biblical language for liberals. Methinks the puritans didn’t die so much as transform.

    • They need to garner more support. I guess the grabbers are pushing for the religious guilt angle.

    • The Progressive movement has many if not most characteristics of a religion.

    • Well, when all else fails, use the ad hominem attack. Standard practice from that side.

Or, in this case, lead with it.

    • This isn’t the race card. This is the gun owners are nutty retrograde Confederate wannabe card. It’s way more effective actually.

  9. A couple of points!

he is as “racist” as the whites that supported Hillary over Obama in 2008 because they didn’t want a black president!

The 2nd Amendment is CRYSTAL CLEAR and it is UNCONSTITUTIONAL to require a permit (permission from the government) to carry a gun! If the government can require a permit to carry a gun they can require a permit to carry a Bible or the Koran since BOTH are equally constitutional rights.

    • Try wearing some more obscure religious symbols in small town America.

We’ve a ways to go on rights, at least in practice, and 2A will become ever more relevant to the “legislative, judicial and executive processes…”

    • Indeed. I went to high school and college down in Arkansas. One of my neighbors in my dorm suite and a good friend at the time, had parents that were in fact good friends of Bill Clinton, who was then the governor chasing the Democratic Party nomination. This was all in the very early 90’s, you see. Anyways, I well recall the first time I ever heard the N word come out of someone’s mouth. It wasn’t my friend or his parents (who seemed like really nice folks) but a family friend of theirs, an older lady in her 60’s or so. I don’t recall the specific context of the conversation, but I do remember being quietly shocked by her behavior, and simply smiling and nodding out of politeness and the fact I was a guest in her house. And it would have been a very long walk back down to Arkadelphia from Little Rock, too.

While I was generally pretty nonpolitical at the time, it may have been the beginning of learning one of life’s lessons. Behind every pretty little mask is often something awfully unbecoming, and that’s getting more and more true of the ‘progressives’ each day.

  10. Y’know, every time someone quickdraws the race card as though it were a challenge coin, they muddy the field and so make actual racism, where it does occur, more difficult to combat.

I’m beginning to believe that the connonical requirement for an editorial slot at the N.Y,T. is an I.Q. of room temperature – in Celsius – in an igloo.

  11. The left has honed its skills of personal destruction to a very fine degree. This latest attack was actually started a week or so ago by John Stewart on his show. His “joke” was that since LaPierre was crazy and he was only the NRA exec. VP, then how crazy must the President of the NRA be? Call me paranoid but I believe all these guys play off the same book. Just like when that little weasel George Stephanopolus dropped the question on Romney about birth control out of the blue. Just a random question? BS. It was part of an orchestrated plan detailed right out of the White House. So now the goal is to destroy Porter at all cost. Won’t be surprised if they have teams digging up dirt on his family, wife and kids. Nothing is beyond them.

    • Ya. Jon Stewart coordinates political strategy with the White House. You hit the nail on the head buddy. Jon Stewart then secretly manipulated Porter into acting like an utter fool. How’d you figure all this out?

  12. Who’s racist, the man who fights for self-defense rights for minorities everywhere, or the progressive who fights to try to take guns away from people in the inner cities–those who need them most to protect themselves? When you look at the demographics of places like Chicago, it’s damn obvious that the gun control agenda is racist as hell.

It’s also sick, imho, that you get all these murders, just about every friggin day, in inner cities. And the media says nothing. And Obama says nothing, he doesn’t care. Then an extremely rare shooting occurs out in the mostly white suburbs and Obama and the media jump to “action” and demand gun (people) control. Who’s the racists???

What else is sick, to me, is that Obama, if he cared about the violence in the inner cities, could make a HUGE impact instantly. Bush (a neo-con, remarkably similar to Obama in many ways) could have as well. But they choose/chose not too. End the war on drugs. The drug enforcement stuff has huge racial undertones. And how do you think the gangs fund themselves, it’s JUST LIKE ALCOHOL PROHIBITION with the gangs back then (the original gangs!) But they choose to go full speed ahead, in fact Obama has been far worse than Bush on this. Yet the media won’t even TOUCH this. If the media cared one bit about minorities, if Obama cared one bit about minorities, they’d do something about this. Sadly the only politician really touching this one recently is Rand Paul.

  13. Racists in the Democratic party seem to get a free pass. I don’t just mean people like Dick Harpootlian (chair of the SC Dem party). I mean the subtle bigots who think that a ticket needs to be “gender balanced” because women will only vote for another woman, or that minorities will only vote for democrats… well, because.

Racist or not, the NRA does not really need another southern white old man who talks about the “war of northern aggression.”

  14. If you read the succession proclamations, it was ALL about slavery. States Rights was something they were for when it was in their favor (like having slaves), and against when not in their favor (like Dred Scott and the fugitive slave acts).

Who ever heads the NRA needs to be super careful to never say anything that could be taken wrong. Yes, I know that is an absurd, impossible standard, but it is the world we live in.

I’d like to see them be less mindlessly pro cop and pro republican.

    • This.

I don’t think Porter’s racist, least his history doesn’t really support that but this was a classic open mouth-insert foot moment. Even in jest anything that faintly resembles a “Southern pride” talking point is not going to play well in NY and it’s going to pitch Porter as yet another out of touch OFWG among the NRA leadership.

And yeah sorry the “states rights” argument is splitting hairs. It was a fight over “states rights” alright… the right to own slaves, and let’s not forget that in 1860 the South shot first.

      • The South fired the first shot against a Yankee fort in southern territory–and they wouldn’t have fired at all if the Union Army had withdrawn (which it was asked to do). Rather, Lincoln ordered that the fort not stand down to assure that the South would fire the first shot.
I went to college in New Orleans in the 1970’s, and yes, they did refer to it then–and do to this day–as the War of Northern Aggression. And in many ways it was, except for the fact that some of the most important battles of the war (Antietam and Gettysburg) were fought when the Confederate Army moved into northern territory. Strategically, all the South had to do was to sit pat; the North (as exemplified by the Anaconda Plan and the Bull Run battles) had the burden of invading and conquering southern territory.

  15. The NRA should stick to what its mission is-Protecting the Second Amendment, for ALL Americans, across the ENTIRE country, today and for the future. So long as they continually refer to a war over 200 years ago, they will continue to provide ammunition to those who claim that they are a bunch of OFWGs who support racial intolerance. Providing ammo to your enemy is the same as shooting yourself-a fool’s folly…….

  16. The Daily Snooze would no doubt be surprised to know that its idol, Barack Obama, has killed more “people of color” than the NRA’s new President.

  17. They didn’t like Paul Revere LaPierre(yes, the bastards really were comming), I hope Porter gives them fits, Randy

  18. According to liberal fascist we are all anti-black Asian and Hispanic racist all live in the woods and lack a full set of teeth. Just the same fascist bull crap out of those annoying holes called liberals mouths.

  19. They are also assuming that slavery was the driving cause behind the Civil War, not the fact that the Gub’ment didn’t have a legal right to stop the southern states from succession but didn’t want to give up the power…

  20. Ultimately, it doesn’t much matter what Porter or any NRA official says or does not say (within reason). The progressive media will twist his words anyway, even if he agrees to play by their rules and stick only to PC language.
