“Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, announced it will not be pulling the type of weapon used in the Newtown school massacre off its shelves,” WSBTV reports, “while another major retailer announced it would. Walmart confirmed Tuesday that it does sell the Bushmaster Sporting Rifle at its stores and plans to continue to do so. ‘We have made no changes to the assortment of guns we sell in our stores,’ Walmart spokesperson Kory Lundberg said in a written statement.” Meanwhile, Dick’s Sporting Goods has made its ban on assault rifle sales official in the Press Room portion of their website . . .

We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.

Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.

We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy.

57 Responses to Walmart Still Sells AR-15s, Dick’s Sporting Goods Not So Much. For Now.

  1. I will still continue to support my local mom and pop gun stores before Wal-Mart. Business may be good but with the high potential for a ban in our future the little guys need our help. Wal-Mart will persevere with or without gun and ammo sales

  2. I went by my local Dick’s this morning, the same one who helped me locate my Remington 700 a couple weeks ago, and expressed my displeasure (politely) to he manager. I gathered that I was not the first to do so. We spoke of the fact that Bass Pro was not 5 minutes away, and Gander Mountain about 25, and how this seemed an unwise decision. I asked that he pass my concerns up the chain at his next opportunity. I do not know if he agreed with my position or not, but he said he would forward what he’d been hearing.

    • You see if we keep using the right terminology, and getting the TRUTH out then maybe, just maybe… aawwhh forget it they will hate our guts anyways, but at least they will be using proper terms!

  3. It’s foolish to make any move to temporarily suspend any firearm sales due to the murder of these kids and teachers. It only serves to falsely give credence to the anti-gun activist’s claim that it was the gun that caused the killings.

  4. Oh man. I’m glad they went the way they did- it would have been a real PITA to have to stop buying ammo at Walmart. I try to buy as much as I can at my LGS, but he keeps banker’s hours. It’s nice to be able to pop in to Walmart at 10PM on a friday night before a Saturday range trip and grab a bunch of WWB.
And since Dick’s is now out of the question……

  5. So Dick’s just shouldered the whole blame for what that kid did? That doesn’t seam to be a very good marketing ploy, especially since they didn’t sell him a gun. They turned him away if I am not mistaken and said as much. The media and it’s infinite lust for blood and blame has more to account for then Dick’s. They announced a lot of incorrect information about people, places, and things, don’t they have to atone for this or publicly apologize and correct their errors, not just shrug them off and hope no one noticed. In the end I think people should just stop watching the news, they don’t report as much fact as conjecture and in truth it seams they want nothing more then to just scare people and insight a mob that has pitchforks and torches to burn a new person, place or thing down.

  6. Good for Wally World. I was in my local Sports Authority and if there is any corp moratorium on ARs (and tac .22), they hadn’t been told.

    • It seems to depend. I’m like equally positioned between 3 different wal-marts. One is right on the edge of Cinci and doesn’t sell any guns. One is right in the middle of corn fields and a handful of smallish towns and sells AR15s more then anything else. The third is right next to a bigger town that is well more of a city, less surrounded by corn fields and more surrounded by suburbs and it only sells shotguns/rifles and no AR15s or anything like that.

One day Wal-Mart will sell rifles and shotguns in California.

  7. Geez, Dicks couldn’t have fumbled this any worse. The worst possible scenario for gun owners would have been to hear he’d purchased his guns legally, or by doing something shady and fooling a dealer into a sale. But no, they were the first line of defense against this kid getting guns, and they did their part. By stopping all sales, they’re saying following all the (existing) laws isn’t enough.

  8. As much as I wanted to support the newly-built local Dick’s Sporting Goods, this move initiated from their corporate high-up’s was not a smart decision. I understand they wish to respect those affected by the CT tragedy, but caving in to such pressure is not a move on the positive direction.

At least I will still be shopping at my local Walmart for guns and ammo. Dick’s? not so much.

  9. This is a ploy if you ask me. At the rate AR’s are selling out, when Dicks does start selling again, they will be able to raise the prices and make more. I’d be very surpised if they put the “original” prices out their in a few weeks time when they start selling again.

  10. I was in Dick’s yesterday. They not only pulled their scary black rifles they also pulled the 5.56 ammo. The ammo pull was verbalized as in not just sold out.

      • Nice!

The one I frequent has always seemed to weather the panic storm in the past as far as ammo stock. It twas a bit of an exaggeration though….they did have some .40sw.

Common hunting and varmint rifle loads were still available.

    • Mine had everything they usually do, except apparently two people came and bought all the. 223/5.56 in the store- save for fourteen boxes of frangible and seven boxes of Defender.

  11. Using Dick’s corporate logic (or lack thereof), condom manufacturers should start offering child support to people who use them improperly and get pregnant. Or stop selling them all together bc rapists can use them to keep their DNA from being left as evidence. Idiots.

As for Walmart, they just see the massive cash cow that is guns and ammo. Expect their shipments to greatly increase in size. God bless their corporate greed.

  12. Walmart’s too big and too ingrained into society to give a serious crap about much of anything. They’ll shutter a whole damn store if it might go union without any meaningful repercussions.

    • That story changed after a day to him having used the rifle to do all the shooting except the final bullet in his own head.
I found the complete turnaround from handguns to rifle to be a little……

      ….odd.

  13. Dick’s (possessive). Or should it be Dicks (plural). I lean toward the latter.

Have no problem with the guys and gals behind the counter, but corporate just skrewed the poooooch.

DSG was on my “list” anyway. They would send me these buyer reward coupons, but none which could be used toward firearms or ammo, thereby rendering them completely useless to me.

  14. I will never shop at Dick’s again. You jump on that politically correct band wagon and you looe a customer. You have the right to sell or not sell what every product you want. My right bear arms. Keep it up and people might wise up and put you out of business. These anti-gun people are the consumers keeping you in business.

  15. Has anyone noticed that Walmart is no longer showing most ammunition on their web site as of today? This even includes 22 ammunition. Seems like the rumors of them cutting back on ammunition may have some substance.

  16. The AR 15 never left the car… All these stories get it wrong on purpose to force politically stores like Dick’s and Walmart to stop selling guns. It is a terrible tragedy.
