26 Responses to Question of the Day: Have You Ever Seen Someone Buy a Gun Who Gave You the Willies?

  1. Never actually making a purchase, but seen a few odd ducks looking. None sending any major alarms going off though. Mostly Gecko45 types and a few black trench coats.

  2. No, I have not seen anyone buy a gun who gave me the willies in the sense that you mean it. However, I did see a female police officer at the Portland Gun Show last year who I’d like to introduce to my Willie as the Brits mean it.

  3. I served in the army and/or went to college with several guys, each of whom were so excited for their 21st birthdays because they could buy handguns and get their CCWs. And the thought of these guys strapped terrifies me. All if them are potential IGOTDs/stereotypical drunk rednecks “ex’cisin’ ar rats ’cause ‘MERICA”. Exactly the kind of folks that reinforce the Antis’ misperceptions.

    • How many malls ,theaters or schools you reckon those “IGOTDs/stereotypical drunk rednecks “ex’cisin’ ar rats ’cause ‘MERICA” have ever shot up? Probably none so get over your redneck phobia.

  4. Oh here we go. “It’s an assault rifle. He shouldn’t be buying THAT type of gun.”. So, he looks crazy, Mr. Elitist Hunter—what kind of gun SHOULD he be buying?

I guarantee you a shooter armed with a Mossberg 590, a Rossi lever action .357 carbine, and two Taurus .357 revolvers could kill a LOT of people in a movie theater.

A local pawnbroker refused to complete a sale of a firearm to a customer who seemed “off” when he came to pick it up after the three day wait. Customer passed the NICS, but pawnbroker felt odd. He told the customer NO. Unfortunately, the customer was indeed crazy, and returned with a sword, with which he stabbed the pawnbroker. Pawnbroker survived the stabbing, crazy guy did not survive the multiple shots with .25ACP. So, I suppose Gander should have been a little more conscious of whom they sell ANY firearm to.

I would wager this young man was drugged with some sort of anti-depressant. The demeanor the witness described sure sounds like someone on meds.

    • I remember that story. The pawnbroker called 911 when he learned the customer had returned with a sword and was lurking outside. The sword guy charged in and stabbed the pawnbroker all the way through and slashed him badly before the cops got there. The victim grabbed a .25ACP (after he was stabbed and slashed) that he had in the back. A few precise shots dispatched the ninja, but the pawnbroker, who almost died, had a hell of a time convincing the DA it was self defense, despite his near fatal injuries and call for help. After a long while, the DA finally let it die, begrudgingly. If someone remembers where the link to that story is please post it.

  5. Right after the AWB sunset I was ordering a new AR at my local gunshop when a mexican gang banger looking fellow came in and bought an AR off the shelf. The salesman didn’t tell him that he was buying a leftover neutered one with a fixed magazine, no flash hider, fixed stock, etc. And I didn’t either… I had the giggles more than the willies.

  6. No, I haven’t seen anyone buying a gun who gave me the willies. On the other hand, I have seen a few voters that gave me the willies, and two Senators from California who made the lawyer hairs on the back of my neck stand at full attention.

  7. I refused to sell firearms to a couple of people. One was a woman that stated she just wanted to waive the gun at someone if they should try anything, and the other was a man that IMO was a few shades short of a lamp. He began screaming he was a lawyer and would sue me/shop.

Right after he left I got a call from other shops in the area, advising me of this moron. They too had refused to sell to him. He tried private sales as well, and still couldn’t buy anything. I imagine at some point he did get a firearm, but it was a hard road for him if he did.

  8. Other than seeing a few people who obviously never even held a gun buying something far exceeding their level of expertise, I did see one suspicious instance. Once, in my local gun store, a shifty individual came in looking to buy a gun but balked when told of the background check. 10 minutes later a woman came in and immediately said she wanted to buy the exact same gun that the first guy wanted, a used Taurus Raging Bull. The clerk asked a few pointed questions and it became pretty obvious that the woman came in to straw buy for the first guy. Not necessarily the willies I suppose, but a potential bad situation thwarted at that instance.

  9. Okay, im gonna have to be the one to say this, but just because he had pink hair and earrings, how does that make him the type that “shouldnt be buying that type of gun”?

Although, this time it actually turned out to be true.

  10. Saw a pair buying pistols at a gun show covered with tats and looking the gangsta part completely. After they left I asked the merchant about them and he said both passed the background check so it went through. I guess that settles it.

  11. Yes, but how could I as one man with my biases and prejudices accurately judge another person’s intent short of having the ability thread minds or see the future?

  12. Kinda, though it was more of an eye roll moment.

I once saw a kid with his buddies, all dressed like they were out of a rap video, try to buy a shiny chrome .357 revolver, he was arguing with the dealer that his speeding ticket counted as a second form of ID since “a state trooper gave it to me just yesterday!”.

  13. If anything, I’ve more often seen people get a discouraging attitude from the guy behind the counter based on appearances- and on many of those occasions, it has seemed less than deserved.

  14. “That’s not a type of weapon you go hunting with, its for home defense and those types of things….”

I’m tired of hearing this bullshit line. I’ve talked to many people that have hunted with their multi-purpose scary black rifle. In fact, what kind of guns did Nick Leghorn use to plug some hogs? Oh yeah, a modern sporting rifle with a scary silencer and a night-vision scope that only a psycho would use.

Just because YOU don’t use something one way, doesn’t mean no one else does. Just look at the video for the oil filter silencer and you can see that nothing is so black and white.

    • Its like the “it was a AR15…a assault rifle”.

fucking elitist fudd snobs. You sure can hunt with a AR15. The cartridge that it uses was invented as a varmint cartridge and it still performs admirably in that role. I suppose remington is selling the R15’s for the tactical crowd (facepalm).

If a person was sketchy and looking at guns, I wouldnt sell them a slingshot.

    • I personally know millionaire business owners, a medical doctor, and a lawyer that all make a lengthy trip down south to hunt pigs with excessively tricked out AR15s 😀

  15. Kind of, but mainly because a couple of people said or did things that they either weren’t acquainted with or did not care about safe handling.

Although there was one guy who kept talking about his AR-15 and all the attachments he’s getting on it (I believe intentionally loudly enough so everyone in the shop could hear). Evidently, this guy believed he could buy a suppressor without all the paperwork because there wasn’t a local police force where he lived. (The salesperson explained that he still had a sheriff, which seemed to take this guy by surprise).

  16. A few weeks ago a guy came into my local gun store with a Beretta M9 and told the guy behind the counter that he was looking for a “case” for his pistol. The salesman looked confused and asked the man if he meant a holster. The man was like, “Uh…yeah.”

If he didn’t know a holster is a holster i wonder what else he doesn’t know.
