“She should go back to law school, where she will learn that it is never appropriate to submit an affidavit that contains a half truth, because a half truth is regarded by the law as a lie, and anyone who submits an affidavit swears to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” Alan Dershowitz on George Zimmerman prosecutor Angela Corey’s omission of any of Zimmerman’s injuries in the affidavit supporting her charge of second degree murder

  1. Dershowitz may be right about Corey, but if the client fails to realize that this ain’t no game, he is going to do jail time. The whole paypal thing is a perfect illustration of Forrest Gumps “stupid is as stupid does”.

    • I fail to see how raising a few hundred grand for his defense was “Forrest Gump stupid” when it’s going to be expensive to fight this thing. GZ needs a PR rep to counter the efforts to paint Mr. Skittles as prom king and O’Mara is going to need experts to analyze the 911 tape, scene reconstruction, and medical testimony.
If he get’s nailed for this it lowers the bar for all of us in a DGU. After 4 months of exhaustive reports I’m on his side as far as self defense goes. He made mistakes up to a point but being beat up on the ground is a reason to fight back.

      • I think you miss my point. Like you I find the story quite enough justification for what GZ did. I support him. What I was saying was that GZ can’t hide any funds nor talk in “code” with the wifey about such things. When your life is in the balance before the judge, man you have to be as open about this stuff as possible. I would have been pleading with OMara to tell him I have these funds. If the attorney knew and didn’t speak up, hell, I would stood up in court myself and told him. I am starting to have my doubts about Omara. Remember he is the one that admitted that HE had GZ’s second passport. I watched the second hearing and the Judge was pissed to say the least. He is going to be the one to decide if the case gets dismissed on Stand Your Ground or goes to trial. Why screw that up? If GZ wants to act like Lindsey Lohan with her Judge thats great but it isn’t what he should do for his own benefit.

        • Let me add also that from what I’ve heard, GZ doesn’t have the funds to afford all the defense costs in any case. Omara will bring them to the court at the end and the state will pay for GZ. I think Chris Dumm is a lawyer and maybe he can speak to the process.

  2. From the link above, these are allegedly three very insightful paras into the mindset, emotional unbalance or immaturity, and integrity of the Florida prosecutor:

“Writing on Newsmax.com, the Harvard Law School professor says Corey called the school and went on “a 40-minute rant, during which she threatened to sue Harvard Law School, to try to get me disciplined by the Bar Association and to file charges against me for libel and slander.”

“When the school explained Dershowitz has a right to express his opinions, Corey “persisted in her nonstop whining,” he writes, “claiming that she is prohibited from responding to my attacks by the rules of professional responsibility.”

“The idea that a prosecutor would threaten to sue someone who disagrees with her for libel and slander, to sue the university for which he works, and to try to get him disbarred, is the epitome of unprofessionalism,” he says.”

    • yes. I hope she follows thru with her “threat” so I can file a complaint with the State Bar of Florida. . . .

  3. I am wondering if Angela Corey was given this job precisely because she is such a nitwit. The prosecutions case is a loser so it would make sense for her colleagues to use it to hang Corey out to dry.

    • I was thinking tha same thing. The case was given to her, a federal prosecutor, to quiet the growing hysteria over Mr. Zimmerman not being arrested. But the guys that assigned it to her knew it was a loser and figured she was the perfect person to make sure it failed like it should. It’s a win-win, Mr. Zimmerman doesn’t go to jail for murder, and no one in the prosecutor’s office with a decent reputation gets the stink of this case on them.

      • Agree with your sentiments, but Corey is a FL State’s Attorney elected as prosecutor for the FL 4th Judicial Circuit Court.

  4. Talk about lack of professionalism. Corey’s smiles-a-plenty ceremony announcing the charges was despicable. Too bad there wasn’t a camera in the room when she made her call to Dershowitz. Jeckyl and Hyde when crossed. She ‘s a bigger threat to society than the SYG law. Explosive personalities like hers roaming around is exactly why we need the SYG laws.

    • I’ve never been one to defend attorneys, but there is A LOT of dirt in A LOT of professions.

Some good comments here by Steve, bontai Joe and Bill F. I’m also not to surprised at Mark N’s revelation that Dersh has used the same tactics he’s accusing Corey of. Maybe he’s repeating the rebuttal he received back then.

  5. What’s iroic to me is that Alan had quite the dust up with another author who disagreed with Alan’s take on issues dealing with Israel, and which included Alan’s alleged attempts to have the author lose his job/tenure. Intimidation has a long and storied history in the legal profession…and elsewhere.

  6. I currently reside in CA (lol) and do not yet own a gun. I intend to get a concealed carry permit (ccw?). I never cared before because I was such a physical specimen that I knew at any moment I could protect myself (I was pretty badass, and had the track record. This is not tooting my own horn because I’m not telling you who I really am. It’s objective hehe) Personally, after seeing what’s happening in Mexico and Syria, I believe that all American citizens should at least have a home defense weapon of some kind.

At the moment I am just an uninformed citizen, like all of the non-gun-owning citizens of America, when it comes to gun laws. What step along the way of buying a gun and getting a concealed carry permit does one learn about laws and rules such as SYG and castle doctrine? Does our country not require gun education or do they? Would have a Gun-Users-Ed course be something everyone should go through? Would a common course correct misinformation and prevent media from presenting lies as truth when it comes to guns and self-defense?

__Shout out to TTAG, the title of this site is what led me here a few months ago. I was curious about guns, laws, and self-defense. There were holes in my knowledge that were eating at me. I used to believe the Florida case was murder ’cause the dude wasn’t in his home. Now I know better. That’s why I bring up these questions!

    • Welcome to TTAG.

Depending on which county you live in, in CA, it may be impossible for you to get a CCW permit. California is a ‘may-issue’ state, meaning that the county sheriff may decide whether to issue you a permit or not, and several county sheriffs are not issuing permits to almost anyone in their county. This is one of the reasons (and there were several more reasons) why I left the state in the middle of last year.

The average person on TTAG opposes required training classes, because they represent another impediment to getting a licence. We believe you should be well trained, but that the government shouldn’t require it. We also believe that a government training class would not teach (or poorly teach) the proper subjects RE gun safety and responsibility. We definitely do not believe in forcing non-gun-owners to take a guns course. (We’re very libertarian here.)

Get your Handgun Safety Card (which requires passing a test on gun safety and responsibility. Go to a gun range and ask the person behind the counter to help you get into an NRA basic handguns course, which is a good course for a first time gun owner. Shoot a few different types of guns, to find the one that suits you best. Buy a handgun. Practice with it at a range and maybe get some more formal training. Then try for your Concealed Carry Permit. Hopefully, you live in a county that will issue a permit to you.
