Run. Far away. Fast. You don’t know what’s happening. Get the hell out.
Either right in front or right behind you, protecting me and mine on the way out, not my job to get involved with current conflict. I am not Police, I am not a reserve, I am not a back-up anything. I am only sworn in to defend my own life and those in my immediate surrounding (state of Indiana)
This occurred during a police investigation of a shooting which had previously left 3 dead, 3 wounded. A women was shot dead by a pregnant woman who was then shot and wounded by an officer of the LMPD.
The west end of Louisville has had a spate of shootings recently. I wouldn’t travel through that area of town unless I was in an armored personnel carrier. Well that’s not really true, it would have to be a tank……
Thanks for some context.
One thing jumped out at me which was the gratuitous screaming by the dumb ass women. Just scream for no reason. That added to the overall tension of the scene as it always does. Look for it and you will see that it ramps up the tension dramatically. Makes me want to belt someone in the mouth.
They scream only because they don’t know whats going on, if they did know, they would be crying hysterically instead; they are no more than a very old infant. I wish I had it as easy as them and could get thru life with just my pecks.
I always notice there is a couple of people that seem to be standing still in total disbelief with their hands at their sides not moving, frozen just like a deer in the car’s headlights the instant before the bumber splats ’em. No clue about what is going on around them, no clue that maybe, just maybe they ought to run or seek cover or duck or something to get out of the line(s) of fire.
That’s what happens to people who go through life in condition white. And when all’s said and done, they blame the guns for pulling them from their blissful condition white dreamland and forcing a brief doze of reality upon them.
Until it happens, you really do not know what you will do. Many years ago, working as a newspaper photographer,I was caught in the middle of a riot which turned into a gunfight that left five people dead. When the rounds started flying, I dived into the floorboard of my car, called on two way radio to the office, and screamed for POLICE! When the initial barrage stopped, I started making pics. No problems until several hours later. That is when the shaking started.
Where the hell did all the cops come from, or were those a bunch of CCW holders running to the fray. They sure muzzled a lot of people…
A second shooting occurred during the investigation of the first, which happened earlier in the day. It was only a block or two away, and the cops were already there (as well as press, bystanders, lookie-loo’s of all flavors) cordoning off a couple block radius around the first shooting, so they all came running.
That’s what I thought at first too.
Looks like a typical day at work. Actually, we had things blow up or serious injuries occur at someplaces that I worked and the dumb foundry people were much better organized and controlled.
No idea what I’d actually do, never experienced anything like it.
I don’t know what happened to these posts, but they’re not loading on a mobile device.
Okay let’s take a page from the “how students should respond to a school shooting” handbook.
(1) As soon as you hear what could be a gunshot, don’t question it. Assume that it is and note the direction from which it came.
(2) Move quickly and safely in the opposite direction from the source of the sound. Try to get behind cover as soon as possible. Move really far away.
There is one potential caveat to this — especially if you are armed. If the shots were extremely close — say within 20 feet — get low immediately and to the nearest cover away from the source of the gunshots. Then use as much cover as possible while putting as much distance as possible between yourself and the shooter.
Above all, remember that it is much harder to place debilitating shots on a moving target even at close distances. The faster you move, the harder it is for the shooter to actually hit you.
