Armed and Fabulous: NRA Wants More Women

More women getting into the shooting sports? Yeah, we know. It’s been one of the most over-done stories of the gun boom. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot more women to be had (so to speak). The NRA’s just launched the NRA Women’s Network along with new social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest. Despite the monochromatic casting in the promo video, more women carrying guns and in the shooting sports can only be a good thing. Maybe they’ll be targeting blacks, Hispanics and Asians in the next video. Maybe.

Maybe they’ll be targeting blacks, Hispanics and Asians

Uh, maybe you want to rephrase that.

  2. avatar LT says:

They might target Asians… brown/black folks, though, not so much.

As I said earlier (or meant to say), going after women is a no-brainer for the NRA. It allows them to say “hey, look, we’re inclusive!” while nabbing the demographic (after those currently into/buying guns) who are most likely to buy their products, particularly the pricey/fancy ones. With CCW being “all the rage” now there’s a bundle to be made in guns and accessories if ONLY the NRA could get these gals to view guns and associated items like the other items they spend their disposable income on.

Doesn’t take a marketing guru to figure this one out.

    1. avatar Levi B says:

So your point is that black people don’t have disposable income?

      1. avatar LT says:

Yes; blacks and Hispanics don’t have as much disposable income. In addition, I doubt they’re as easy to successfully market to; as such, even with more disposable income they wouldn’t be so inclined to spend it on the moneymakers in the gun industry.

        1. avatar John says:

This is starting to tip into profiling territory…

  3. avatar Mark says:

More women shooting is potential salvation of The Second Ammendment since they’re usually the ones crying in fear of firearms like Sarah Brady when in fact, women MOST need to be armed because they’re so often targeted by criminals. Getting people of other than European ancestry involved in NRA is challenging because they tend to be perceived as a whitewash despite the “secret” that they’re the nation’s oldest civil rights organization.

    1. avatar Aharon says:

“women MOST need to be armed because they’re so often targeted by criminals”

While I’m not sure about non-violent crime, men are actually the victims of violent crime at a rate 4X that of women.

      1. avatar LT says:

Shhh… you’ll get NOW smashing down your door spouting truth like that.

  4. avatar mikeb302000 says:

“More women owning guns” is nonsense. If there’s any truth to the “more” part, the numbers are tiny.

This campaign on the part of the NRA is a desperate attempt to normalize something that is just not normal, at least for most people.

I’m not fooled. You guys might be, but that’s only because you have the same goal, to normalize your obsession.

    1. avatar Moonshine7102 says:

Just use your real name, Dog Gone. It will make it easier for us to keep you, Laci and Mike straight that way.

      1. avatar Ralph says:

I love it when those guys soil their panties.

        1. avatar Aharon says:

What is the name of the mental disorder for people like mikeb who live in denial?

        2. avatar Ralph says:

What is the name for people who live in denial?

          Egyptians?

        3. avatar Aharon says:

          🙂 ha!

I guess a case can be made for that one based on the story of how pharaoh kept on making decisions that led to ever greater punishments. He was in the Nile or denial. One definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over that leads to the same failed and undesired result.

Perhaps mikeb is really a dead Egyptian mummy?

        4. avatar Silver says:

I’d say it’s a combination of projection, the need to control others in order to satisfy one’s own fears, and the mental and emotional inability to deal with the realities of a harsh world. And sometimes with gun-grabbers it’s plain old stupidity, like anything else.

        5. avatar Moonshine7102 says:

What’s hilarious is that they don’t even realize that their distinct posting styles give them away. Laci the Limey Lawyer attempts to argue constitutional law while spewing enough vitriol for ten ex-wives, MikeB plays at being the “reasonable” one, and Miss Dog Gone believes herself to be quite the psychologist. Only the internet could bring those three together. Truly, we live in interesting times.

        6. avatar Aharon says:

          #1

We have our own three stooges.

        7. avatar mikeb302000 says:

Aren’t you the one who accused me of an “ad hominem” attack when I was addressing 80 million gun owners?

        8. avatar Moonshine7102 says:

Did I say something untrue? Is Laci a lawyer living in Liverpool? Do Laci’s posts have a certain, shall we say, flavor? Do you believe yourself to be reasonable? Does Dog Gone often use the words “obsessed” and “fetish object”? I believe we’re done, here.

    2. avatar Tom says:

Sorry to say, but a more than a few women and girls are into firearms in my area. Oldest Daughter does very well with a rifle.

    3. avatar Tom says:

      try again
Sorry to say, but a more than a few women and girls are into firearms in my area. Oldest Daughter does very well with a rifle.

  5. avatar Aharon says:

“more women carrying guns and in the shooting sports can only be a good thing”

Just like some or many men can be irresponsible and immature gun owners so too can women be the same.

    1. avatar mikeb302000 says:

Wow, who’s side are you on? That’s exactly what I though when I read that ridiculous statement. It can only be a good thing when the women in question are competent and responsible, which as we all know, will not be all the time.

  6. avatar Ralph says:

    NRA Wants More Women

    I can relate.

    1. avatar Aharon says:

      Haven’t you learned your lesson?

BTW, I have a coffee date with a woman who is a defense attorney. I’ll probably just keep it at friends.

      1. avatar Not Too Eloquent says:

        I’d bring a shotgun.

        1. avatar Aharon says:

ha! I wonder if it is legal to meet with her with myself wired? It would be funny asking her for advice if it is legal to be on a date and wired. One man had a false rape accusation dropped against him after he provided the police with a recording proving his innocence.

        2. avatar CarlosT says:

Depends on state law. In Washington, you’d be breaking the law unless you informed the other party that they were being recorded. I’m no dating expert, but I figure that would tend to put a damper on most encounters.

“This date is being recorded for quality control and/or training purposes.”

        3. avatar Aharon says:

It would be funny to start the date out with informing her of my intent to record the date and asking for her permission. That would end it real quick. I can see her now going back to her law office and telling the other women about her experience. Just another dating nightmare story. Poor women; it’s hard to find a good man these days. ha!

Maybe I can get Ralph to fly up here and chaperon us?

        4. avatar Ralph says:

Hey, I just joined the AARP, I’m planning for Medicare and you want me to play chaperone?

          Just kill me now.

      2. avatar Moonshine7102 says:

Wait, what? Aharon is voluntarily associating with a woman? Well done! True, she’s a lawyer. But, baby steps…

        😉

        1. avatar Aharon says:

Thanks for the reminder, I need to be smart and get a vasectomy before having any sex. She is in her forties and without kids (I think) and I’m not looking to be a sperm donor. I know too many men who are now paying daddie$ for twenty years because of mysterious birth control failures.

      3. avatar CarlosT says:

I thought you were staying away from women “by choice”.

        1. avatar Aharon says:

I usually do. Now and then the need for female company does get really strong. Usually, I can get satisfied with just some socializing. The pleasures of the flesh can pale in relation to considering STDs, AIDs, child-support, lifetime alimony, FRAs, the financial cost to keeping women always happy, etc. Ideally, I’d love to be married to a woman with a couple kids, a few dogs, etc. However, today’s modern marriage version 2.0 which gives women so much legal power over men keeps me back. It is logically a bad and risky investment which harms more men in modern society than it helps.

        2. avatar Ralph says:

          Spoken like a true client.

I’m sad that the NRA really missed a golden opportunity when making these “women” videos that they didn’t include some minority women. Instead we got a vision of women in the NRA as not only all being white, but also blue eyed blonds. Ok, the main spokepeople of the video look like what they look like, can’t really change that, but the group shots of ladies on the range and some of the interaction shots of the lady shooters and their coaches could have shown at least a couple of folks that were something besides blonde white women. It’s a little thing, but it would go a long ways towards portraying the NRA as more inclusive.

    1. avatar Rokurota says:

I agree. But you exist in the world you know. My guess is the folks on Waples Mill: 1) know a lot of heartland Caucasians and not too much else; and 2) scoff at “diversity” as an overused trope.

  8. avatar Sanchanim says:

Hey you know the arms manufacturers really need to push those hot pink hand guns, I mean come on it goes great with sun dresses etc! 🙂
You may not feel marvelous, but you look marvelous darling!
Especially with that matching 9mm and pink pearls combination LMAO!

    1. avatar Aharon says:

I just hope that women embracing gun ownership and carry don’t pull them out as quickly as they do credit cards.

      1. avatar Sanchanim says:

Yeah then we would all be in trouble!!!!
But hey if they do I am going to have to come up with some type of woman accessories, you know like a Gucci handbag and holster combo lol

        1. avatar Aharon says:

A fast re-load accessory for a revolver that looks like a lipstick case.

  9. avatar John E> says:

I was at a gun show this past weekend and it was remarkable the number of women purchasing handguns. Not only that, the number being sold period.

    1. avatar Sanchanim says:

I think people are finally seeing the light. Now they all want to gun up just in case.
I think more women too are single or single moms or are alone with the kids while dad is off working. Having some protection in the house gives them piece of mind.

  10. avatar Jordan says:

Even as a pro-gun CCW holder, the conservative politics package that almost seems to come bundled with NRA membership is off-putting enough to me that I refuse to join. With the image that the NRA is made up predominantly of older, straight, conservative white males who have no problem taking away womens’ rights in other areas, It’s no surprise that women are staying away in droves.

I am ready to support the NRA when they start supporting the entire population of the US, not just the folks that look like them.

    1. avatar LT says:

I’m somewhat inclined to agree – with the “good ol’ boys club” aspect of the NRA being offputting, at least. One of many reasons they’re not likely to see a penny from me, ever.

That said, I’ve got no problem with ’em ramping up awareness and keeping a little pressure on legislators, for whatever good that does.

Dating a lawyer seems like it would resemble dating a cop in some ways.
