AK State Gun: Pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 .30-06. Or Not.

[HTML1]

“Sen. Charlie Huggins, a Wasilla Republican who last year proposed making the pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 .30-06 caliber rifle the official state firearm, has withdrawn the legislation,” thenewstribune.com reports. The Alaskan pol was trying to duplicate the state gun hoopla generated by Utah (Browning M1911) and Arizona (Colt Peacemaker) back in the Spring of ’11. Huggins is bummed, the trend is dead and the trib is left explaining the ill-fated firearms choice. “In sponsoring the bill, Huggins said the rifle was used by hunters, trappers, Alaska Natives and pioneers during Alaska’s formative years. He also said the Model 70 is well-built and reliable and carries enough ‘stopping power’ to be useful in a crisis situation.” To paraphrase the Obama administration’s mantra, you should never waste ammo during a good crisis.

I’d like Oregon to declare the Ruger SP101 the State Gun for the simple honest reason that it is my favorite gun. OK, my personal subjective opinion aside I now welcome others from Oregon to declare their call for a State Gun.

      My favorite as well

Which version do you have? I have the 357 with the 3″ barrel. I’m going to buy the new SP101 357 4.2″ barrel in a couple weeks. Have you held the new 4.2″ barrel 357?

I love my SP101 too, but how about something Oregon-made? I’m thinking Noveske.

      1. avatar Aharon says:

I haven’t heard of Noveske before. I went to their site and it seems like they build some quality tactical guns. OK, even though I’m not a tactical gun buyer I’ll vote for them to represent Oregon.

    How about the .375 H&H?

  4. avatar Rokurota says:

The AK should be the official AK gun.

A good choice. Can’t speak to the politics of “state this” and “state that” declarations and legislation, but the pre-64 Win70 is arguably one of the best sporting rifles ever made.

  6. avatar Uknown Bastard says:

Here in OHIO, we Don’t want Hi-Point to be a state firearm. For obvious reasons of course.

  7. avatar Woodsman says:

Noveske should definitely be the state gun for Oregon, John makes some outstanding rifles.

I’ve got the “modern” version in stainless steel with a laminate barrel. It has the modernized version of the iconic claw, and it’s chambered in .30-06. It’s even got a beat up Redfield scope since I didn’t have the experience to tighten the scope rings properly. Despite that, I’ve taken a seven or eight whitetails with it. The Winchester 70 is a great classic, and if a state wants to adopt it, I say bring it on!

Where exactly is the facebook like link ?

  10. avatar george from fort worth says:

since oregon is a truly RED state, shouldn’t the state gun be an AK or SKS?
