Hang on. Isn’t the U.K. up in arms about an adult going postal with a shotgun? What’s that got to do with kids—parentally supervised—participating in smooth-bore-related field sports? Dunno. But the British media’s shocked—shocked!—at the prospect. “On the day the MPs are due to debate a possible ban on shotguns for children, figures have revealed that hundreds of primary school-age children have been granted licences over the past three years,” the deccanchronicle.com reports. “Between 2008 and 2010, a total of 281 children aged 11 and under were granted licences, one of them as young as seven. Five licences were granted to eight-year-olds, 25 to those aged nine, while no fewer than 92 went to 10-year-olds. Another 158 licences were given to children aged 11.” Why that means. . .

Every single day, an average of four licences were granted to children aged under 16.

And twice on Sundays. JK. Nothing gets done on Sundays in the U.K. thanks to the soporific effects of Sunday lunch.

Still, Labour MP Thomas Docherty [above] may have managed to rouse indignant gun grabbers (are there any other kind?) with this broadside for the broadsheets, a statement accompanying his proposed legislative remedy to kiddie scattergunners:

“These are very disturbing figures. These children are below the age of criminal responsibility and yet are being issued with firearm licenses,” the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

“I call on the government to support my bill which would restrict access of very young children to lethal weapons,” he said.

Like . . . knives! What business do seven-year-olds have cutting their food with lethal weapons? After all, you can eat most English food with a straw. Just sayin’.

  1. That country has completely lost themselves. Sad too because they were something to admire for a brief (albeit very brief) time.

They are now just an island floating in the ocean.

    • they were something to admire

Although England did produce some people to admire (like Churchill), England was just an exploitive and vicious empire that made a living by subjugating and raping entire civilizations.

      • Along with the subjugation and rape, the British created institutions that make these countries some of the most successful in the world. None of the other colonial powers were so considerate.

        • This.

If you look at the countries where they were the longest, like India, you will see that they have been making RAPID strides up the ladder from the third world to the first world, and all at the same time while England is moving from first world to third world….

        • Kendahl, you must be kidding. Before the British East India Company and its private army possessed of its own military academy conquered it, India was the greatest manufacturing country in the world. By the time the British were driven out India had been reduced to nothing but a producer of commodities, mainly agricultural. The upper class of Britain is invested around the globe through a series of cleverly sanctioned tax havens. That class wants the average man to be nothing but a safe quiet serf. The bureaucratic class has been shaped to agree with that sentiment. The great English-speaking nations were founded by people FLEEING Britain. As for the shotguns, all little English girls should aspire to be like the Duchess of Cambridge, and she’s a dead-on pheasant shot. Once again the Kingdom squelches legitimate ambition.

  2. They need a bit of John Stokes to stiffen their spines:

‘Meanwhile, a British lawmaker said families of the hostages should stop complaining.
“I am sick and tired of the mewling and puking of the relatives of hostages in the gulf and of some of the hostages themselves,” said Sir John Stokes. “During the last war we never heard sobs of widows. Cannot these people keep a stiff upper lip and think of the country as a whole?”‘

  3. Well, one good thing about the UK…it’s a perfect visual aid to what could happen in the US if we continue to let ourselves slide as such.

    • what could happen

Silver, I think you mean “what is happening.” Let’s face it, the US is rapidly becoming totally emasculated.

  4. Calls to mind this classic rant by D. H. Lawrence:

“Curse the blasted jelly-boned swines, the slimy belly-wriggling invertebrates, the miserable sodding rotters, the flaming sods, the sniveling, dribbling, dithering, palsied pulseless lot that make up England today. They’ve got white of egg in their veins, and their spunk is that watery it’s a marvel they can breed…Why, why, why was I born an Englishman! “

  5. “It is said that the effect of eating too much lettuce is “soporific”.”

    Very nice Beatrix Potter reference:)

  6. I’m stunned by the success with which the British PR machine has succeeded in selling to many of the commentators above a romantic notion of a Britain whose obituary was actually written two generations ago. Emasculated? We’ll be lucky if we just emerge as free people regardless of gender, not cheapened bitches whoring for the bankers and tax-collectors under the whip of debt. Manhood? Competing against the slaving hoards of Asia? Under the heel of neutered money-grubbing legislators? Better we should be obliterating the paper of national debt, not just paper bulls-eyes. There, I’m done. Laugh.

  7. Having lived in the UK for a few years I know that the UK’s real problem is not firearms. But a huge neglected underclass that is just being kept quit with state benefits, alcohol, drugs and a completely ineffective namby pamby policing / justice system. These ingredients make for an interesting cocktail that will cause this country many problems in the years to come. And their invertebrate spineless politicians do not have the balls to tackle the countries disgraceful social problems. I have said it before and will say it again; most British people are just a bunch of sedated sheep, accepting all their governments rubbish.
