Ever known for its effectiveness and relevance on the world stage, the United Nations General Assembly recently held…let me get this right…the 8th plenary high-level meeting on the prevention of non-communicable diseases. You’ll forgive me if I admit I spent my time driving needles into my eyes rather than watching the video at the link. Non-communicable diseases, to you and me, would be those otherwise known as ‘lifestyle’ ailments. Those that go hand-in-hand with wealthier people enjoying elevated standards of living. Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and the like. What does any of this have to do with guns, you ask? Good question, but give me a graph or two to get there, because Hizzoner Michael Bloomberg is involved…

Yes, Mayor Mike was on hand for this crucial confab to contribute his two cents to the discussion, probably because his city hosts the mistake on Turtle Bay. And as cnsnews.com reported, the patron saint of food planning and control had some interesting things to say about the role of government in people’s lives.

…New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said “governments at all levels must make healthy solutions the default social option.”

Speaking on the government’s role in diet and health last week, Bloomberg told the UN General Assembly, “There are powers only governments can exercise, policies only governments can mandate and enforce and results only governments can achieve. To halt the worldwide epidemic of non-communicable diseases, governments at all levels must make healthy solutions the default social option. That is ultimately government’s highest duty.”

Never mind those other high duties like crime, terrorism or fiscal viability, Bloomberg’s made regulating the salt, trans-fat and cigar smoke intake of the eight million citizens in America’s biggest city his personal Manhattan Project. And he’s had to do it because, as he makes abundantly clear, people are really far too stupid and irresponsible to make those types of choices for themselves.

Which tells you all you really need to know about why he so vehemently believes New Yorkers should be denied their constitutional right to carry a gun. If you can’t trust someone to regulate their sodium intake for God’s sake, how can the dumb saps possibly be allowed to safely carry a firearm?

Bloomberg’s made his particular paternalistic brand of malignant nannyism (fully aided and abetted by a like-minded city council) a hallmark of his now three-term reign in the Big Apple. If New Yorkers are ever to be allowed to exercise the rights enjoyed by most of the rest of us, they’re going to have to fight that battle one food group at a time.

They’ll also have to demonstrate – somehow – that they can be trusted to manage their own diets without their betters having to constantly look over their shoulder. Maybe then we can talk about dangerous things like guns. That’s assuming, of course, that Bloomberg doesn’t engineer – Hugo Chavez style – a fourth term in office for himself as he did his third.

  1. I am sure Gloomberg has been talking to Bev Perdue in NC and has a way to manufacture a “crisis” when needed

  2. What is Mikey’s problem? Growing up, did Bloomberg’s parents deny him hot corn beef sandwiches and pickles, lox cream-cheese and bagels, brisket and noodle koogle?

  3. so i cant defend myself and now i cant afford to eat a college? thanks bloomberg……. these ramen noodles are freaking delicious

  4. Mike would make a fine European leader, I could see him mayor of London, Paris or some other paradise over there.

    • Thanks. Good video for all to watch.

Criminals are so bold in England that more than 55% of the home breakins occur while the residents are home. Criminals are not afraid of being hurt knowing the resident probably does not have a gun and that the resident cannot legally use any physical weapon on them. In America, about 11% of breakins occur when residents are home. The mere presence of so many guns in America helps keep everyone a bit safer at home even if the resident does not have a gun.

  5. Yes, the government that so effectively regulated the response to Hurricane Katrina and two land wars in Asia should be empowered to regulate my trans-fat intake. I’ll raise a glass of (imminent safety threat!) raw milk to them.

  6. New Yorkers elected the mayor they deserve, just like the majority of saps across the country got the president they deserve. No sympathy for New Yorkers…hell, they probably don’t even mind slavery like this, sheep that they are. (any NYers in present company excluded)

Let ’em suffer, maybe it’ll open some eyes.

Modern politicians are sick and twisted, corrupted by European thinking. We in the US have our own way of doing things. You know what the highest duty of American government truly is? Staying the hell out of the citizens’ way.
