Leslie Nielsen of Naked Gun Series 1926 – 2010 RIP by Robert Farago | Nov 28, 2010 | 3 comments facebook twitter linkedin email comments TTACer says: November 28, 2010 at 22:27 just don't call him "Shirley" Love "OJ Simpson, as you've never seen him before." B.A., he was a leading man type, taking mostly dramatic roles, for instance, as the spaceship captain/romantic lead in "Forbidden Planet," or the ship's captain in "The Poseidon Adventure." His career had gone into something of a decline, playing mostly supporting roles in the 60's and 70s, before he hit comedy gold in Airplane!, where he played a doctor (favorite bit: "This man needs to get to a hospital!" "What is it, doctor?" "It's a building with sick people in it, but that's not important now.") Post-Airplane!, Nielsen starred in a TV show that spoofed crime shows, a series that was canceled quickly, but begat the Naked Gun series of movies (and represented the nadir of O.J. Simpson's movie career, outside of Capricorn One). Nielsen was a gifted comic (we'll excuse and forget the unfortunate turn as Mr. Magoo. Please.) and created a memorable movie persona, as the bumbling, supremely confident professional. Think of him as something like an American version of Inspector Clouseau. He will be missed. His career had gone into something of a decline, having stabbed the shit out of his wife in the mid 90s. Before he had hit comedy gold in The Naked Gun 2 1/2, where he played a detective (favorite bit: losing his appeal to his kidnapping conviction.) Post-Arrest!, Simpson was aquitted of murder in criminal court and then found guilty in a civil court, a series that was not canceled quickly, but begat the Keeping up with the Kardashians (which represented the nadir of asanine reality TV, outside of American Pickers). Simpson was a gifted athlete (we won't excuse and forget the unfortunate turn as a wife killer.) and created a memorable movie persona, as the bumbling, supremely professional. Think of him as something like a famous version of that guy you knew in highschool that seemed to have everything going for him back then, but then last you heard he ended up flushing his life down the crapper twice in a row. He will not be missed. Reply Write a Comment Cancel reply Your email address will not be published.
