Last week, our test Ruger SR9c experienced a double feeds. I didn’t think too much of it. I’m happy to give most box-fresh weapons a 200-bullet mulligan. But then I spied a post over at gunnuts.net wherein Caleb complained that he’d had the exact same problem with the exact same gun firing the exact same ammo (Remington 115-grain UMC). So I called Remington ammo maven Chris Carson in Little Rock, AR . . .

Carson couldn’t have been more helpful. After noting the batch number, he said it’s entirely possible that gunnuts.net got the same batch of bullets that I bought in Rhode Island.

Carson promised to investigate. He’s also going to send me a label to mail him my remaining ammo for evaluation. And his employer will provide a box of Remington Golden Saber bullets for comparison testing, evaluation and compensation.

After schmoozing a bit about bullets and guns and their sometimes stormy relationship, a theory emerged.

“It could be a length issue,” Carson told TTAG. “The round might be slightly too short, but still within SAMMI specifications. [FYI: Remington’s spec. for UMC bullet length is 1″ – 1.147″] The cartidge might be coming up out of the magazine, hitting the feed ramp and not tipping in properly when it hits the top of the barrel.”

Carson said the Ruger SR9c’s failure to feed is not necessarily a bullet issue or a gun issue. But he did mention that he’d worked with Ruger on a chambering problem when they first introduced the LCP.

“The throat of the barrel wasn’t quite deep enough,” Carson revealed. “Ruger fixed it and repaired all guns manufactured up to that point at no charge.”

TTAG’s got a call into Ruger. Meanwhile, we opened another box of UMC and fed it to the SR9c without incident. More updates as needed.

  1. Hey, you know what? The exact same thing happened to me with the exact same gun /ammo combo. Every other shot is a double feed!! I love the feel of the gun, and how it shoots other than that. Heck, I just bought it yesterday at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Gun Show, and this is the first hundred rounds through it !?!

  2. certainly like your website but you need to check the spelling on quite a few of your posts.
Many of them are rife with spelling issues and I to find
it very bothersome to inform the truth however I’ll surely come back again.

  3. I’m getting a new computer but don’t want to lose my Firefox bookmarks. Is there an easy way to save a record of all the URLs in my Bookmarks and then quickly upload them to Firefox on my new computer?.
