The "tactical" is the model, from the manufacturer. This shotgun was not designed for home defense as it's main market target, it was designed to meet the roles and demands of 3 separate markets, LE/Military, Home Defense, Competition... most everyone forgets about us guys in the competition arena. I would bet that we put our guns through more torture though and that would include most LE and Military personnel(trust me, I am Military).

I have a Benelli M2 Tactical with extended tube making it a 8+1 gun for 3-gun and 2-gun matches. The ghost ring sights on it are amazing! Trust me, shooting a 12" steel target at 100yds with a slug isn't fun or easy on a vent rib barrel, been there, tried that. With some range time and practice you just drop on squeeze and hear the ring. Our practice sessions are also not nice or gentle on our guns. A case of 250 rounds in not 2 cases is standard use for an evening practice session with our shotguns.

The M1 Super 90 is a good gun, had one and ran it into the ground. To the Point that the receiver was worn out. and no longer rebuildable. The action isn't the same either, the M2 shoots smoother and softer with pretty much no matter what load. Have you ever tried to turn around in a hallway with your traditional shotgun? Not exactly easy... the joy of say an 18" barrel is that I can lower and just turn around and be right on target.

Not to knock your shooting style but try taking a shotgun defensive class, you do aim, a shotgun is NOT a point and click weapon, yes that works to some extent. I don't miss except maybe a dozen times in an entire waterfowl season.

Now that I ranted about that, I am sorry. If you want a smooth shooting gun like the M2 Tactical for almost half the cost?... get a Benelli M2 American, 26" vent rib gun(think you can get shorter if you want), same smooth action just in a standard semi auto layout and it still will perform without a hiccup no matter what you feed it!

I've had my Benelli M1 Super 90 since 1997. I am very proficient with it and know it through and through. The M2 is only cosmetically different. This being said, there's NO WAY that the bolt simply slams shut when you push the cartridge release lever. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but that's how it reads. Even so, if you are talking about the bolt release button, why would you have your finger there in the first place? Seriously, the gun isn't that foreign...
Lastly, the word I hate the most..."TACTICAL". I want to barf. It's called, putting a shorter bbl on your shotgun. There, I just made it, "tactical". You don't need rifle sights on shotguns either. Shotguns are supposed to be fired with both eyes open in more of a pointing-type fashion anyways. With shotguns, you look at the target, not focusing on the front sight like a pistol or rifle.

Finally bought an M2 tactical in pistol grip, loved the weight and balance of this gun at the store, I was hooked clean lines. It is replacing a mossberg 500 pump Ive had for years am confused on loading sequence despite the direction book loading the tube easy the sequence of loading the chamber confuses me tried it with snapcaps to make sure I dont screw up a 1200 dollar gun seems like bolt slides foward before firing pin engages want to make sure Im doing things right.

I am pleasantly surprised (and pleased) to see a review of the M2 in this configuration. I bought one of these last year to replace my venerable (and non-tactical) 870 and have been favorably impressed. In an AWB state like NY, we're limited to one 'non-evil' feature on a semi-automatic shotgun, which means one (or less) of the following: true pistol grip, collapsible stock, mag capacity >5. I was considering the 'stock' Benelli M4, but its pistol grip stock would have prevented adding an extended mag in NY, and in some torture tests with low-recoil buck and target loads my brother's M4 would occasionally fail to cycle. The stock Benelli tactical M2/M4 stock (hmm...) also has a standard LOP that is a bit long for those of us of shorter stature (5' 7") with non-simian arms.

It took a while to find one of these, but after getting mine a year ago I've put several hundred rounds through it, from 1 oz. target loads to standard 00 buck. I've had only one failure to cycle (with the aforementioned target loads). Much of what I have to say about it echoes Capt. John's review: it's a smart-looking shotgun, it's got excellent sights, and it's ultra-reliable. Inattentively releasing the slide has drawn more blood than any gun I've ever owned save my Ruger Mk. III Hunter. It points well, and the inertia system runs very cleanly.

The Comfortech system does moderately reduce felt recoil, but in my opinion Benelli oversells the degree to which it does. Also, to exchange the standard gel recoil pad for the one with the shortest LOP, Benelli charges >$100. For a part that is probably worth $15-20 at most (and is very hard to get). On the plus side, with the 13.5" LOP pad the M2 fits me perfectly. A slight negative for the M2 (and this is true of all Benelli products in my experience) is that the stock trigger is scared-of-lawsuits heavy and doesn't break as cleanly as I'd expect for a fairly pricey gun. A good trigger job took care of that for me.

One additional factor not explicitly mentioned in the review is the easy availability of accessories for the M2. It's pre-tapped for the top rail, and I added a mag extension and replaced the bolt handle with one my finger won't slip off of. Now it's really sexy.

Congrats to Capt. John on his first TTAG review, with hopefully more to follow. Although new to The Truth About Guns, the Captain has a wealth of information on firearms and is down-to-earth helpful guy to the novice. He helped me build my first AR-15, and came to my office to boot on his own time to help me with the project! I am sure his eagerness to extend his knowledge will be beneficial to TTAG readers.
